The store would look like a small, gray room with one person standing at the register. The person comes in, asks us if we have it, then we can check the computer. If it's there, we go in the back and find it for them. It may take over three hours to find it though, The back room is larger than the average mall.
That sounds surprisingly like a British company called Argos. Unless you're shopping online, you go into the shop, flick through one of the catalogues screwed to the desks, punch the item number into one of the little stock checker things also screwed to the desk to see if it's in stock, fill out the form & queue up to pay (or, a recent innovation, go to one of the auto-pay screens where you can order & pay by card at the same time) & then wait for your order number to be called. And wait. And wait a little more. Because out back is a large storage area where all the stock is kept, & some poor bugger has to go running for your order once it's been punched in & paid for, then stick it on the conveyor belt/dumb waiter.
