Work-related query for those in Canadalandia

Just had an email from a customer who is emigrating to Canadalandia. Our company is pretty unusual over here - a democratic worker's cooperative with an ethical outlook and an interest in keeping down food miles etc. ur main business is wholefoods and similar, which are the products the customer wants. They're interested in whether or not we can suggest a similar sort of organisation over there.

Anybody know of anything like that?

Not here in Ontario. I'm sure there are some. They are most likely on the west coast however in British Columbia. There are specialty shops where they can buy that kind of thing, but I don't know about any set ups like yours.

There are health food stores, but probably nothing on the same level as yours. I agree with GK, probably most likely in B.C.

Whole Foods is a US based company, but has a few locations in Ontario and BC.

They aren't quite the same, but there are still a few co-op grocery stores operating in BC that I know of, and a few in Saskatchewan. The ones I remember (I haven't been in one in at least four years) were more into the organic foods and the worker-cooperative kind of mindset, but that was Vancouver Island, and they do have more than their fair share of the granola set.

For organic/whole foods, Community Foods is a big one in Alberta, I think. And there are Co-op grocery stores throughout the Western provinces - they are not specifically whole foods/organic, but they have a strong community involvement and emphasise local products AFAIK. You buy a share for $5 and then get a percentage of your purchases back at the end of the year (they sell petrol and home heating oil too).

There are whole food coops all over the country, they're just very well hidden. There's a chain of whole food/organic food stores in Quebec called "Boîte à Grains", but for coops, they're best to do their research through AgCan (agriculture Canada)

Any provincial Ministry of Agriculture should have info on their website... if your client has an idea where in the country they'd like to settle, I can probably find it.

I second the mention of Community Foods in Alberta. Planet Organic is another really good one out here.
