  • Covering shifts

Someone called in sick last night; I got called at least 6 times to come in and cover...haha. Thankfully I wasn't home, but even if I was I might not have answered.

I love how all these women act like they just suddenly got stuck with this two year old kid and its not their fault and they just can't work anymore. As if they didn't know they had a kid when they took the damn job.

    Maybe they were actually sick.

No I don't the mean the person who's out; I mean the other 6 people at the store who can never cover a shift. Like our manager, she can pretty much only work the standard hours because she's got a 3 year old to have to provide day care and whatnot for...and thats fine, except, why take a job that requires you to work a lot of long and odd hours if you know your life doesn't permit it?

I can usually work any hours, except for Tuesdays as my schedule has me working w/the scanning person at 5 a.m. on Wednesday mornings. Currently my availability is no later than 7 pm on Tuesday (have to have at least 8 hours between shifts.)

I've run into coworkers who want me to switch an occsional Tuesday shift, but they're usually working past that time - to which I tell them I can't b/c of the 5 a.m. Wednesday shift.

Any other day, I don't mind so much . . . especially if it's an earlier shift, which I did a couple of Saturdays ago. I was originally scheuled to close, but then one of the cashiers found out she couldn't come in to open, so I was asked.

Me? I'd rather open than close any day, so I jumped on that. Got out of there at 1:30

I used to work for a grocery store that a lot of teens worked at because their parents wanted them to learn to be responsible. I used to screen my calls because they would give them my number to call in and cover for them and I never would. Not a matter of I don't have kids or that, but rather because I was already working 40 hour shifts and did not want to work on the weekend. If they didn't want the job then they should not have taken it. Most of the kids had parents that taught at the local college and had money.
I like to scare small childeren, it's fun and as long as you can out run the parents you can get away with it.

            They called you 6 times?!?!

Seems to me any person with a functioning brain would get the message after the first call without an answer...or the second...or the third.

Reminds me of Lumburgh in Office Space: "Ummm, yeah hi, just letting you know we did start at the normal time today......."

              6 times.

Two from the person on shift at the time, telling me the overnight lady wouldn't be in.

One from the overnight lady herself, telling me she had an emergency and couldn't go in.

Three from the boss, telling me the overnight lady wouldn't be in and she needed me to cover the shift.

I wasn't even home at the time they called anyway, and normally I'd have covered it except I'm the ONLY person who ever covers shifts. Everyone else has kids at home and can't do it. But I hardly think its fair to penalize me just because I don't have kids at home. Any time I get a little annoyed at being around my boss too long (she's my ex-girlfriend) she always tells me that I need to leave my personal life at the door and not let it interfere with my work. Well that shit works both ways, hun.

I'll be infuriated if you make another post later telling us that you got in trouble for not being available for them.

Seriously, on days off.....people go out, do stuff.....you know, like normal people?!

I can't stand when people at work try to call you in and get angry because you aren't there or you won't answer your phone. You're allowed to have a life too!

A long time ago I made a decision about covering other people's shifts. I would do it if I wanted to, if it benefitted me, and that was it. If it didn't, then no way. Because I also learned a long time ago that 95% of the people who say "I'll owe you one" never cover your shift when you need it covered.

That being said, I have been known to cover a lot of shifts. I am a good guy, and in the food service industry, additional shifts are additional money...sometimes a lot.

Back when I worked for the Restaurant of Red and White Stripes, I had a bit of a reputation with the management of being a good guy to call when they needed something covered. So much so, that when I one day said no, it shocked them. The phone conversation went something like this....

                  JESTER: "Hello?"
VERY NICE MANAGER: "Hello, Jester? I have a problem. Stupid Smurf can't work today, and I was hoping you could cover the shift."
JESTER: "Sorry, Very, I won't be able to work today."
                  VNM: "Thanks....um, what?"
JESTER: "I said I won't be able to work today. Sorry. Good luck getting the shift covered though."
VNM: "But you ALWAYS cover shifts!"
JESTER: "Actually, I cover them 90% of the time. Today is the other 10%. These things happen. Have a good day, Very!"
                  VNM: "..."

                  It was classic!

Thank God Crewing can't call us out of hours! I get call off standby but that's it, they cannot contact us when we are not meant to be at work.
