  • Spontaneous job offer and debating what to do

So I was chatting with a friend / former coworker on Facebook and he told me the hotel where he's serving as AGM has an opening. He said I was "basically hired" if I wanted it. Better hours, better commute, even a possibility of better pay, but I am nervous about taking it. It would save us a lot of money on travel, but I know the people I work with now and it's a great place. I don't want to risk losing that, but I also know I won't thrive long term on the schedule they have me on now, and that schedule is (in a minor way) negatively impacting my work performance, my family, and my professional development. I've been told I won't get a schedule change any time soon.

Still I don't like change (never have).

    Any advice anyone?

Research the place really well. See if there you can dig up info online such as complaints (or praise) from former workers. Ditto customers' thoughts about the place (as that may be indicative of the sort of treatment you can expect at their hands). Speak more with your friend if you decide to apply, and get everything in writing that you can. Make it clear to them (politely) that you'll need time to give a 2-weeks' notice if you do change jobs.

What kind of working relationship did you have with this former cohort, equals or were they an AGM then too? Even if you got on before, a change in status of one party can cause a big shift in the dynamic.

Change is inevitable, and will occur if you want to move up regardless of whether you stay or leave. It sounds like you've already weighed most of the pros & cons, just make sure it's what you want before you hand in your notice - as well as ensuring there's a solid offer, rather than just a post on FB.

Some excellent advice here, and remember that you have already been told your schedule won't change anytime soon. The people are nice, but will that make up for the drain on your energy and time?

Change is always scary, but if I were told I was "basically hired" that would go a long way towards making me inclined to go for the change (with due research, of course ).

Well looks like I'll be taking the job after all. I got fired this morning. I told them over and over that I didn't function well on the night schedule and even put in a Americans with Disabilities request to switch. (I have cognitive disabilities) and they ignored it. gOtta love of the USA.

Hope you said "Why, thank you SO much!" and walked out with a huge grin on your face, thus confusing the hell out of them.

Seriously, sorry you got treated so crappily by your now-former employer.

I'm not an American and don't live there, but I think it's more a case of shitty employers rather than the country as a whole ... employers who figure "Hey, there's a truckload of unemployed folks out there, I don't have to give consideration to your issues."

You are better off away from these idiots. Best wishes for a brighter future!

I would take the new job too, I hate commuting to work and the shorter the better tbh. Plus your ex boss sounded like a #%@!.

They weren't assholes, just ignorant of the laws. Nobody seems to get trained on ADA. Sucks that I have to educate my employer vrs the company educating my employer.

Ouch. Perhaps it was meant to be. Move swiftly, secure that new job ASAP while you can -- and then maybe have a quiet word with the Labor Board about the old one. Who knows? You could have a case.

I actually work nights so I can take care of my disabled son they know there may be days off where I cant make it in and the only other person who is my co worker will close for me if need be I am currently the only closer in my department for a call center.

However u need to look at the paper and see what they fired you for even with said ada papers if your in a right to work state it is going to be hard to prove your case.

I'll decide if the headache of pursuing it is worth it. The first thing I'm supposed to do is put in a complaint to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and see what they think. I've documented everything at this job for just this reason (hotels seem to have a thing about labor laws being optional, I had a similar issue, though not about ADA stuff, at my first hotel job and didn't keep good enough records so I was SOL).
