  • When should you call (for my daughter)

So my daughter turned 16 and has been putting in applications. She put in an application to a gas station just built up the road from me and received a call back the very next day. The only problem is, they wanted to schedule her interview for Monday morning at 10 am. She's in high school. She called them back, told them she would be in school and asked if she could reschedule for Monday afternoon. The hiring manager said she would call the store manager and get back to her.

We she hasn't heard back yet. I have not searched for a job in 10 years lol. I told her to wait until this afternoon, if she hasn't heard back, call the same lady and "check in" with her about the progress, to show continued interest in the job. Is that a good idea, in your opinion? Or should she wait a couple more days?

That would be a huge red flag to me if they can't comprehend she is in high school and thus can't interview during school hlurs. Who's to say they wouldn't try and schedule her during school hours then make her find a replacement.

I think that the lady who called is a corporate person not in the office, so I'm willing to give the actual store manager a shot to actually pay attention.

I'd keep searching. Gas stations around here require someone old enough to sell alcohol. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't realize how old she was when calling to schedule interviews.

I'd try food service and retail. Some of them have more flexibility to support younger staff members. Good luck to your daughter entering the world of customer service, bwa ha ha.

Yes. Tell her to sign up here at her earliest opportunity.

We don't sell alcohol at gas stations up here in the Frozen North so that never occurred to me, but if she's a legal minor, then that might be why she hasn't heard back. Shame they won't just come out and tell her so, though.

It might not hurt to have her call back one more time, for the look of it if nothing else, but I agree that she should probably focus more on places where liquor is not sold and thus age is not an issue.

It's gas station, but it has a full kitchen. She'd be working in the kitchen part of it. She says she is going to call to check in today. we'll see what happens. I need her to get a job so I don't have to put up with her teenage angst everyday

Hahaha you'll still get it when she comes home...and not just teen angst... teen angst with added SC-ness

BTW Did she ever get to Rio?

Are there any amusement parks near you? They should be hiring their summer help soon. While they do have their share of SCs and stupid corporate policies, they can be a pretty fun place for a teenager to work.

No amusement parks, unfortunately. She called yesterday and left a message, I think she's pretty much decided that if she doesn't get a call back to move on. I keep reminded her that she has no past experience, so she really needs to apply at a ton of places to improve her chances at a call back. But you know, she knows everything and I know nothing.

She did not get to Rio, she sort of just quit working on it. But I can't complain much, she just received notice from school that she is in the top ten of her class academic wise, and has a 4.6 GPA (before I had this kid, I had no idea you could go above a 4.0 haha) and if she keeps this up, she should get a full scholarship.

My understanding is that 4.0 is straight "A"s, and to go higher needs advanced placement (basically the equivalent of 1st year university) courses. Not all schools offer them, so at some schools you can't get over a 4.0. For highly-competitive college/university programs, this means that students from some schools have no possible way of making the cutoff GPA for acceptance into the program.

As for which schools offer AP courses and which don't, that's a subject for Fratching.
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

Any big-box retail stores or grocery stores nearby? They can be pretty good about hiring minors and offer schedules that work around school and extra-curricular activities.

I think she is going to try Safeway next. It's not too far. They say they will hire minors, but thinking about it, I don't think I've ever seen teens there. Its worth a shot. The walmart here only hires 18 and up. I keep pushing her for Chic fil A. At least she would always have one weekend day off

Might be just a regional phrasing, but pushing teenagers rarely works.
Just try it as (one of several) suggestions?
                          Any other catering/babysitting work going?
                          (I did babysitting/washing up in a pub/café and waitressing as a kid).
