Amusing.
My last name is ranked as the just a bit less than the 2,000th most common.
(Scarily and suprisingly, at least to me, is that the surname "Jester" is about 1/3 as common as my actual surname. Weird.)
My cousins on my mom's side? 5th. Yep, that's right, only four names more common than my cousins' last name!
This interested me, so I stared checking out some names.
My older sister's soon to be ex-husband: in the 700's.
My younger sister's husband: Almost the 7,700th.
RW: Close to 3,200th.
Then it got really amusing.
My cousins on my dad's side? The A bit over the 66,000th most common. In other words, not too many occurrences.
My paternal grandfather's last name (not the same as mine): Almost the 85,000th.
My paternal grandmother's: Well past the 87,000th.
My mother's parents names: Neither my maternal grandmother's maiden name NOR my maternal grandfather's surname were even LISTED! Nor was a shortened version of one of them that I would think wouldn't be that uncommon.
So then I started looking at the lists of the first names. Found some (to me) interesting things, most of which I'll spare you. But a few things jumped out:
One of my cousins whose last name is the 5th most common has a first name that is the 17th most common for guys. Having run into SEVERAL people with both his first and last name, this does not surprise me. Not worried about anyone figuring out his actual name from this info, as there are so many people with that name, it wouldn't matter.
My parents wanted to give us simpler (and thus more common) names than theirs. They succeeded, with my sisters both having more common names than my mom, and myself having a more common name than either my father or his father, whom I was named after. (Heck, my older sister has the one of the 5 most common female first name in the country!)
One point of vindication for myself: My first name has many spellings. I have always maintained that my way is the "correct way" to spell it. And, of the three common ways to spell that name, my way IS the most commoon, thank you very much.
Okay, that was probably my most boring post in quite some time. Time to forget the lists and go to bed, huh?
