I've been on both sides of the "Wait for the call deal"

Did 7 (yes *7*) interviews for one company, and they went silent.

Did two interviews for another company and got the standard "Thanks, but no thanks. We'll keep your resume on file for 6 months". 4 months later, they called me again for a slightly different job.

Three interviews later, I had the job I've got now.

Moral of the story is that sometimes a company *will* call back.

My rule when I was job hunting was to get the paper on Sunday and go through all the ads with a pad of paper and a pen to get all of the possible opportunities ready. After that, I'd email the ones with addresses. Monday morning, I'd start calling the ones without email. Continue as necessary until the list was dead. Go to any interviews I managed to arrange. Thursday, I'd call, if possible, and email if not, the ones that I'd sent resumes to in order to show that I was still interested, and to cross off any that had closed the opening since I first contacted them.

Touching base can be a deciding factor in whether or not you get hired. Just don't be a pest about it. My timeline was usually a follow up call a few days after the resume or application was done, and then once a week after that.
