  • Worst Luncheon Ever

So our store sponsors and provides books for >state< Book Fair. Lots of local and some not-local authors show up and sit at tables in this flea market atmosphere and people come and talk to them and buy their books.

Every year there is some sort of special luncheon you can buy a ticket for and have lunch with an author (and like 200 other people). Last year was Jane Fonda.

This year is the worst idea for a lunch ever.

Pay $10, have lunch with...Miss Manners.

"Miss Manners, can I ask you a question about your newspaper column?"

"It's MAY I ask, and get your elbow OFF the table!"

Wow, no argument there for worst luncheon idea ever. Especially when I've looked at some of the things that are mentioned that wend out of phase after 1910.

I love Miss Manners! I love to read her column. Then I love to get together with my ILs (especially SIL#2) and out-manner them at every turn. Ticks off SIL#2 all. the. time. I. do. it. (Ain't I a stinker? )

Oh well, to each his own, I suppose.

I'd prefer Miss Manners over Jane Fonda, but that's just me.

Having sat through Barbarella, I have to agree.

I sympathize with you. Hated the film.

I wouldn't be allowed to be at a luncheon with Jane Fonda because of my Daddy. (He'd disown me). My father is ex-military and very pro-military and he has problems with Ms. Fonda's politics.*

*If anyone wants to discuss Ms. Fonda's politics with me and why my Daddy dislikes her either PM me or go to Fratching with me. Otherwise, please don't make this into a political thing - I'm just stating a fact: Jane Fonda @ luncheon = IDR not going to said luncheon. Thank you.

It wasn't so much hating the film with me. More of a surreal "did drugs really mellow out that much since the late 60s?" feeling, because you would need serious drugs to appreciate it, or to believe the underlying theme they were pushing.

Maybe it was just a generational culture clash, kinda like when I showed my kids the late '70s version of Flash Gordon and trying to explain to them "Well, this isn't just late '70s, kids, this is late '70s camp. Don't try to understand it, just try to appreciate it. Despite, or perhaps because of, the cheesy XF and directing.

"OK, I give up. Just pretend this is MST3K and make fun of it."

I don't think Miss Manners would be constantly correcting someone she were having lunch with. I'm pretty sure she would be polite and simply control her own behavior.

Good manners dictate that you make your dining companion comfortable. Etiquette dictates the utensils you use. Miss Manners would make every effort to make everyone at her table feel comfortable, although misbehavior would certainly warrant "The Look."
