  • Idiot drivers suck.

The title doesn't seem work-related, but I promise - it is! It happened while I was at work on the store's property (the parking lot).

My brother is 20. He drives a REALLY nice decked-out Toyota X-Runner. It's a show truck. It's not a garage queen, but he takes extremely good care of it, and is very very VERY protective of it. After all - he's invested thousands of dollars into it.

He ran by the store today to do a couple of things. As he's backing out of his parking place to leave, he sees a car. So he stops. Which, well, makes sense. The other car obviously wasn't paying attention and kept going. Right into his back bumper. Here's the interesting thing: Michael (there are a million and half Michaels, so I feel comfortable using his first name) has a 3-foot scratch along the BACK of his bumper. Which means that he stopped and she didn't. If he wouldn't have stopped, the mark would have been on the side of the truck, not the back.

Cue the usuals...exchanging info, calling the cops, etc. The lady essentially admitted fault to Michael, but then changed her story when the cops got there (duh). While waiting for the cops, she proceeds to LEAN on Michael's truck. Bad move. Michael's 6'3. He looked her up and down, and said "please, don't lean on the truck". (I would have added "haven't you done enough damage?"). She moved. She then had the gall to essentially tell Michael that he should pay for the damage since he has a nicer car, that he shouldn't have such a nice car at his age and be so protective of it, etc. Michael gave her a death glare (his specialty) and says "I work hard for this truck." He does - the kid puts in like 90 hours a week, plus school. I have no idea how he does it.

Anyhow, the cops get there and take the statement, etc. She basically tells them that they're BOTH at fault. Which may be true, but she had the right of way, and he let her have it. He stopped. She claimed that she "couldn't", but she was obviously going slow (scratches, no real dent), and continued for several feet at a seemingly continuous rate of speed. If he had kept going, there would have been a problem. I'm also sure he would have pulled forward if he had time, but he didn't. The parking lot is also quite spacious - there's room to move if there's a stray car.

So, we'll have to see. But if she tries to get Michael to pay totally for the damage, there'll be a problem. My dad works in the insurance industry. My brother totaled his original truck a year ago in an accident that was in no way his fault. The lady who hit him did essentially the same thing (why such a nice truck if you're so worried about it...bringing age in and all). After my dad was through with her, she cowered away with her tail between her legs. So...we'll have to see.

What, because he's young he doesn't deserve to have a nice car that he works hard to be able to afford? By her logic, why should any of us get a nice car if we're just gonna worry about the thing? Let's just all drive jalopies so we can smash 'em up at will.

And because he does work hard for his vehicle, that means he should be the one to pay for the damages she caused?

FTR, it doesn't sound like it was his fault at all. He started to back up, he saw someone coming, and he stopped to let her by. Sounds like it's entirely her fault.

Basically she drives into a stationary vehicle and blames the other driver. Sorry, she's at fault, next!
A PSA, if I may, as well as another.

And this whole thread is pretty much the reason I'm already looking for fitted, police-grade wrap-around pushbars for the new Challenger, which hasn't even come OUT yet.

Too many lazy drivers around here to go without a bit of protection. And besides, it's a stylistic statement.
