Couple of days ago, customer has an order that includes a particular product and a coupon for said product. She was telling me how she'd won the coupon in a fundraiser (can't remember what for now).
I glanced absently at the coupon ... only to see that it expired in March 2022.
Crap.
I pointed it out to her, explaining that I could not honour the coupon and writing "Void" across it in big red letters.
However, I also told her I could use our "magic code"
to take $5 off her order ... which was, coincidentally, the cost of the product. She wanted to take the coupon back to talk to the fundraiser organizers about it, just to give them a heads-up in case there were any similar problems with other coupons given out as prizes ... and also, I suspect, to advise them in future to check these types of prizes more carefully.
I should add that when I explained the problem with the coupon, she was a bit taken aback but not at all rude or hostile, nor did she blame me in any way for it. Hence the $5 off her order.
