Much though I don't want to talk to them...
Isn't it supposed to be me hanging up on the telemarketers and not the other way around? And why is it always when I tell them to hang on a moment? It always confusses me when they call and ask for someone and I say 'hang on' and then they hang up on me.

they are often rated by the call length or the calls per hour/shift so waiting for you is hard on their numbers. This sounds like a good tatic to get them to leave you alone (Sorry to all the CC members)

I hate the telemarketers like people that call (well for one they're not supposed to be calling at all to begin with....) but I always say "let me give him/her the phone" and they've hung up before I could get the phone from my ear. Many times I the person's in the same 8x10ft room I'm in.

Maybe they're taking a page from the keyword-abusing outsourced CSRs, and acting on the word "hang"?

And on a completely unrelated note, why the heck does the spell checker on this text entry form consider it's own smiley codes to be questionable/misspelled?

I once asked a telemarketer what company he worked for... On the fourth rephrasing of the question he hung up.

I was actually annoyed. How rude.

I have them call for my "IT manager" all the time

its so funny as its my job to vette calls and they simply refuse to give me any information....

is it a personal call, (nope you dont know his name)

can I help you (nope you only want to speak to them)

what is the nature of the call (oh you cant tell me)

then you dont get through honey!

it takes 3-4 calls before they relent and admit they are telemarketers.... then still get pissy when Im like.... NO you do not talk to them. They are an internal department they DO NOT take calls from the public. If they want you to call them, they would GIVE you their personal DDI's bye!

I one one similar once. I asked what company he worked for, "I was just wondering if X was home." So I asked, "what company?". "Company, oh no he knows me, I'm Y!". So I asked, "What about all those other people in the background on the phones?" To which he finally replied "nameofcompany" so quick I could barely make out letters in the name.

Well todays didn't even bother to wait. Usually it's when I have to ask them to spell or repeat it because the name isn't in the main directory. Today's just hung up the second I asked him to wait.

Maybe they are afraid you are getting an air horn or whistle to blow in their ear?

I had a woman try the whistle thing when I called her about her bill, but she was too winded to really blow it.

Just save yourself time and aggravation by hanging up as soon as you realize you have a telemarketer on the line.

I am getting the recorded calls now DEMANDING that I call them NOW! sounds like a bill collector right? Newp, it's the factory warranty on my 2005 vehicle is about to expire and they want to sell me an extended warranty.

They mostly aren't telemarketers in the sense that they are trying to personally sell me something. They are asking for people who work there and I get to transfer them.

You do realise that some of our board's members are or were in that particular job? You do realise that they don't do it because they want to irritate people?

Well said, Raps. I have no problem with the nice telemarketers--if they're polite, I can't really go off on them. I simply say I'm not interested, and hang up.

The rude ones are another story. They *deserve* to get yelled at, or air horns, or whatever. Sorry folks, but I have *very* little tolerance of those fools, especially if I'm home sick and they call *multiple* times. In other words, I've already told them I do not want their vinyl siding package; I don't want their windows; I don't want my damn driveway resealed...yet they keep calling!
