The last few days have been fun. I usually avoid posting my current work experiences here to avoid having them read by a co-worker and having someone's bundies get in an undle, but I'm really sick of this and need to vent.
I work security, specifically as a Mobile Driver, at a local college campus. This means I drive the security vehicle around, patrol the satellite buildings, and the other small campuses that don't have their own security. I work graveyards.
Anyway, a day or two before my shift rotation, the other graveyard driver who works my days off (we do 12 hour shifts) managed to badly damage the mobile vehicle. He sideswiped a cement post in reverse, fast and hard enough to crumple the side panels from the back of the vehicle to the front wheel well, making the door nearly impossible to close properly and ripping off the driver's side wing mirror. This means the vehicle is no longer street legal, and cannot be taken off campus.
No problem, right? We have provisions for emergency rental cars, and the company has it's own mechanics, so this should be easy to take care of, right?
WRONG! The head office had to be called 4 times before they clued in that this vehicle was NOT driveable on the road, and we needed a replacement. The damage happened saturday night, we finally got an independent company mobile to patrol our off-campus sites. We limped along with our damaged mobile, being promised a replacement vehicle (Basically, just something from Budget or Enterprise, nothing really special)
Monday... no replacement. No big deal.
Tuesday... call about replacement. Ooops, they forgot. In the meantime they send us something from their reserves to use, and tow away our existing mobile. No problem, right?
Well, the vehicle they sent us exists on the accountant's spreadsheet under the 'fully depreciated' column. It's JUNK. It's a huge old Dodge, with over 200k on the odometer, smells like something died in the ventilation, has about a quarter turn of play in the steering wheel, and with a automatic shifter that has been worn to the point where getting it in position for Driver or Reverse is a matter of guesstimation.
But that's fine. Maybe it doesn't fit in our parkades, and is louder than a semi, and the brakes are iffly, and the windshield washer resevoir leaked a full bottle of fluid all over the ground... at least it's street legal, right?
Well... no. You see, the headlights don't work.
Not one bulb burned out. Not the highbeams only working. Not at all.
Now I'm the NIGHT SHIFT driver. So while the day shift driver can get by... I'm screwed.
Now, it gets better. We have two parking lots we were supposed to barricade off. Normally facilities puts the barricades in the lot for us, and we place them after everyone has left for the day. Except today, facilities neglected to put barricades in these lots. That's fine, because we've got this big truck, right!
Except, NO, we DON'T have this truck because it has no freaking headlights!!.
So now I'm sitting here, starting my shift, with two lots (One of which is OFF-SITE) that I have to barricade, and to which I have to TRANSPORT barricades. I also have three satellite buildings and 3 parkades I'm still expected to patrol.
Supposedly we're supposed to have a contract with a rental car company to provide a vehicle IMMEDIATELY in these situations, but either our local head office is declining to invoke that clause (Likely due to cost) or local rental company doesn't have anything for us to rent.
Either way, I'm bjorked.
