The reason for closed toe shoes is two fold . . .
    1. Safety . . . if something is dropped on your foot your risk of injury is majorly reduced if you have your toes covered . . .and the damage that could be done is also reduced, broken glass on the floor can be kicked up when one unknowingly walks through it etc
    2. depending on the store it could be health/ sanitation issue

My job requires footwear to be closed-toe and closed-back. Probably safety rules there too.

That being said, I always got away with wearing my Birkenstock clogs to work whenever I did, even though I'd bring another pair of shoes in my car if asked to change them. Other employees wear similar shoes and don't get asked to change them either. It's one of those rules that isn't enforced.

When I used to have the option of wearing the store polo shirt or a white button-down shirt, I'd choose the white shirt whenever I was working on the salesfloor. It was cooler than the polo shirt.

We have to pay all out of pocket for our uniforms at the Police Station.
        Say what?

I pay for none of my uniform.

        At all.

The Police pay for everything, down to the belt for my trousers.

I'd be damned if I had to buy my £500 body armour myself...!

          A pointer from the UK....

Office smart or Smart casual you're assumed to own some shirts and (non-jean) black trousers so it's your wallet.

If Company branded stuff (uniform) is required then they issue it to you.

If you do wear a uniform and it requires special care OR you don't get a full weeks worth of clothes (you're doing more washing than you normally would) you can get some odd rebates. (example - kitchen whites should only be worn for 1 shift, if they don't provide a laundry service and don't provide enough uniforms to last you through a week then you can claim against the extra costs involved. The assumption is that you do 1 batch of laundry per week)

You may be able to dispute some items and receive an equal contribution to buy something more suitable. I had this in a canteen - they required appropriate shoes but offered plastic uppers, given my susceptibility to athletes foot I got my own pair of work shoes (Magnums) and they stumped up £35 towards the cost.

Crazy, that's kinda true... none of the officers have to pay for their uniforms/duty items, unless you count the dry cleaning bill.

Us Dispatchers get stuck out in the cold.... apparently, I found out the shirts only cost about 20 bucks each, just takes 40 bucks to sew on the badge patch.

*Buy* company shirts? What the hell is that? If they want you to wear their logo they should pay for it!
Meh, companies do that all the time as it keeps costs down. In the long run it's not supposed to cost you anything as you can claim it as a tax deduction.

Yeah, I'm not looking forward to that aspect of moving to my new job. In the call center, we can get away with pretty much anything. During the weekdays (M-Th) that I work, I try to wear cute tops with my jeans, and stick to the jeans that are in good shape, but I still wear jeans and flip flops. On Sundays, I wear sweats.

When I move into my new job, as a trainer, I have to dress all professional-like again, with dress pants, no flip flops and all that stuff. It'll be worth it, but I'll miss getting to do casual Friday every day.
They let you wear jeans at your call center??? I am so envious. we're all in proper business attire like suits.

Who's doing the sewing? Paris Hilton?

There's gotta be a local seamstress who can do it cheaper than that. Hell, *I* could probably do it for you, including postage both ways, for less than that.
