  • So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish. You're fired.

[half drunken ramblings... skip if you wish...]

    So,

I'm being laid off. I'm on my wacation, and my boss just called today to say, "sorry, it's official. Your last day will be the 15th of this month."

Part of me is kind of pissed, but mostly I feel good about it.
No more shitty "tools", like using Excel to account for some of national ISP:s IP:s, both private and public. No more trying to convince managers that keeping a record of our DHCP log, would be actually a legal requirement, as is making absolutely sure that DHCP option 82 traverses from other last mile providers that use our core network and our upstream...

And I get a package. Package means that even though I'm not required to appear at workplace after 15th, I'm still allowed to, as well as I'm allowed to use my work computer until a minimum of three months after the fact.
I'm also being payed my normal salary until 3 to 5 months after I'm laid off.

    [/drunken ramblings]

What to do now? I've got a million options open for me.
    1. Go back to the hamster wheel, in different setting.
    2. Make my own wheel, as in start my own company.
    3. Go to a different wheel, as in to sales, B-to-B
    4. Chance the career, become a sheet-metal-man
    5. Go to Customer Service, to become a manager one day
    6. McKitchen beefman
    7. Park Chemist.

Do some kind of study for a while to take a break from working, then try to find options 8, 9 and 10?

Thats actually a nice severance package. If you're stumped, I know some states (like Texas) have worker re-education programs where you can get training in a new career for free if you've been 'laid off with no reasonable hope of being able to return to your old job'.

If I hadnt been able to get my transfer to Seattle, I was going to have the State of Texas pay $7000 to re-educate me as an auto mechanic.

...still wondering if I made the right choice. Cant really ever outsource your mechanic....

Yep, that's nice. I hope you'll get a new job after your "mandatory" 1 month do-nothing-time.
A man can be stupid and not know it, but not if he is married.
