  • Isn't the Sign Supposed to HELP Generate Business?

Every day, on my way to work, I pass by an insurance office. I actually don't know what kind of insurance this guy sells because the sign just has his name on it. A "Bob Jones Insurance" kind of thing.

Good ol' Bob likes to put up clever sayings on the big marquee in front of his office. Stuff like:
    - Born to fish; forced to work.
    - Anger is never without a reason but seldom with a good one.
    - Never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly.

Most of them are at least mildly amusing, even if they're all things I've heard before.

But about a week ago, Bob put up a new one. I must admit that it has me thinking. Specifically, I'm thinking, "What was Bob trying to do with this quote? Did he stop to look at it and consider any effect it might have?"

Imagine this, on a sign in front of an insurance office:
"If you think no one cares about you, try missing a payment."

Does that seem a little... ill-fitting... to anybody else?

Again, mildly funny. At least the guy isn't trying to be a bland corporate blob.

I'm that sign. But on the bright side, he probably generates a lot of head turning.

It got your attention...which is what advertising is supposed to do!

There's a vet clinic close to my house that always does that. They had one up a few weeks ago that read: "What would you do if there was no possibility that you could fail?"

I know it was supposed to engender deep thoughts of Aim for the stars or something but the first thought that came to my mind was "Lottery tickets, baby!!"

I agree, he's following advertising practice #1 and #2. Make it tasteful, and make it something the person will remember.

Reminds me somewhat of one of those church readerboards you see that was amusing...

"Down in the mouth? Jonah came out ok!"

I'll also betcha noone will miss a payment with him this month.
