  • Awww, no PA

Today is day 2 of our stores PA failure. For unknown reasons the PA Amplifier died. They were supposed to overnight us a new one. It is designed to be simple to fix, remove old one, attach two wires from PC/Phone System and two wires for the speakers, plug in and set volume level so no specialized person is needed to replace the Amp.

Well it never showed. Now this is good and bad.

    BAD:
If you need to call someone for whatever reason, say a spill, it is a PITA. We can still use the speakers on the phones, none of which are on the sales floor, and say "If anyone has seen <person> pleas tell them to go to <location/call extension>" but chances are no one will hear it or if they do not see the person needed.

If we need to page a custoemr or a emergency such as lost child arises.

    Good, in a evil way:
The way incoming phone calls work is the Phone system receives the call and the caller uses the auto attendant to direct their call to the appropriate department. When they press the button it parks the call and automatically makes the page "<Department> telephone call on <XXX>, <Department> telephone call on <XXX>."

Now this page requires a working PA amplifier. Since we have no Amp this means we don't know if anyone has called, unless they called the service desk. In the last two days I have only taken two phone calls, on a average day my dept will usually get 5-8 calls, more on weekends. we Thought about disabling the auto attendant but that would still require someone to make a page to tell us we have a call.
