  • New registers

We've got new cash registers at work, they're actually a lot easier to use than the old ones... that is, when they work properly! When they don't work they have to be restarted, which is either a very complicated process or "turn it off and turn it on again" (which isn't recommended because it loses some data).

The sucky part is there are 2 registers and only 2 cash drawers... the old drawers don't fit in the new tills. So we have to quickly count up the money and the final drop and stick the drawer back in. Two new drawers were ordered but delivered to the wrong store by mistake, and the other store's manager doesn't want to give them back.

Be happy you didn't have to help disassemble the old ones.

I got assigned to do that when our new registers came in about 2 years ago or so. I must've inhaled at least one den full of dust bunnies while doing that.

We had a few registers fail last year. When IT came out to look at it, it was a sight to behold. Every nook and cranny in the PC was stuffed solid with dust and other crap. We even found ants in one. I guess that is what happens when you don't keep the PC off the bottom of the check stand.

They replaced most of the PCs a few days later.

The main register PC at my old job would lock up at least once a week. I wasn't allowed to use what passed for petty cash (very similar to IOUs in that you take money from the register and hope your note about it being important was believable) to get a can of compressed air to help with the problem.

When the server failed (due to--guess what--dust and overheating), the day manager told me to just pull apart the register PC and clean what I could since we couldn't use it anyway.

Massive dust monsters, beige goop which we hoped was dust turned gummy and even a few identifiable bugs--some of which were only parts

By the sound of it I'm pretty lucky that the old registers were ripped out on my day off.

The new ones can do a bunch of stuff the old ones can't, like:
-include more than 1 "misc" item per sale
-add a description to misc items
-reprint receipts from before the last shift change (up to a month before, apparently)
          -refund fuel sales
-automatically apply volume limits to fuel discounts (e.g. 6 cents per liter off up to 30 liters)

          and more!
