Miscommunication or Not Loud Enough?

Yesterday, a customer brought a moneygram slip to me. There was only one amount on the paper. I asked the customer if he was sending or receiving money and I had to ask him a few times since he either couldn't understand or hear me. I ended up writing my question on paper and I still had trouble understanding what he wanted.

My ear with the swimmer's ear problem somehow plugged itself up. I can't always tell if I'm talking loud enough.

I found out through the money order/moneygram that the customer was sending the money. After that, the transaction went pretty smoothly.
