  • New job- HELP!!!!!

I'm starting a new job on Monday, and was talking to the new boss today to get a bunch of info of what time I'm to show up and who to ask for and all that good stuff.

Seems the guy I'm to ask for is the guy I will be replacing. And (for bonus points) was just about fired last week.

I have been warned by the new boss that he may try to sabotage me as he knows the clock is ticking down for him at the lab . He's an ex-Telco and Union guy and from what I have heard, there are some entitlement issues.

New boss has also said to call him on the cell if things get really bad and he'll have the old guy escorted out within 15 minutes.

SO - I think I'm between the rock and the hard place. When I get there, I'm not gonna know my nose from my arse for finding my way around. I gotta depend on a guy who's gonna be out of work in (at most) two weeks to train me.

    Any ideas?

get anything he tells you in writing (for reference purposes) and verify it with your boss.

Also, don't pick a fight with him or anyone. If an issue is going to occur, let it be due to him.

Finally, it sounds like your boss is at least looking to give you a chance. If things get heavy, take up his offer.

Doesn't anybody else know about the particulars of your job other than the guy that you're replacing? It seems to me that the guy who's leaving won't have any incentive to train you properly. He's leaving!
That's kind of messed up that you're being thrown to the wolves without knowing which way to turn. That's no way to start a new job.
Why can't this so-called "new boss" help you out? Who shit in his cheerios?
So if I were you I'd contact whoever is higher in power than the new boss.

        A little miffed today Bright_Star?

There is a limit to what a manager can do, and it sounds like he is doing as much as he can. The boss also said that he's supporting Bandit and that he can be reached if there's a problem. It's not exactly "Throwing him to the wolves" as you say.

I was thrown to the wolves on my first day in retail for example. I was given a 1 minute run down with how to work the till for one type of transaction then told to have fun.

take a note book with you and write down EVERYTHING he teaches you

how to do it, when to do it, what to do it with, who to ask if you cant do it

blah blah blah write down EVERYTHING

then at the end of everyday go to your boss and verify these things and make any corrections

thats saved my arse a lot in the last job because people would say how come you did it THIS way it was supposed to be done THAT way and I would flip open my book and say.... Emma told me to do it this way see

              Let me get this straight.

The person training you is the person you'll be replacing.

They're pretty sure he'll train you poorly.

They're willing to escort the guy out, if needed.

              LOVELY.

I'd say not only take copious notes, but have the guy read & sign off on them, too. That way if he taught it wrong, you've got his signature to prove that is what he said. There is just not enough CYA to be had in a situation like this.

Well, the first week is over.

After the first couple of days of dick-swinging, things actually were not as bad as they could be.

While the guy I am replacing was not forthcoming about information, he would (grudgingly) give it when asked for it. I don't think he was expecting the response of "Bite Me!" when he was asking for the telephony version of "Muffler Bearings".

Key thing is to ask the people I will be dealing with how things actually work. Helps when I'm on the 4th floor and he's in the basement. Amazing how the dominoes can fall when talking to one person who will lead to another.

The boss, who is about 400km away, has been very supportive. Talking every day and he's also pointing me at the right people as well. Glad it was a quiet week. The first time going into a Level 1 Clean/Radiation area will take 1/2 hour just to get suited up with someone who's done it for 20 years as a guide. Nothing like 5 booties, two baggie suits, a hat, and mask with face shield. One of the things that comes with working in a radioisotope facility. (yeah, if he would tell me something wrong, he'd get a walk off the property)

As far as new stories will go, I'm sure there will be more than a few times when security will pay me a visit.

AH well - long weekend and then back for more fun starting Tuesday. The most amusing thing has been watching people try to figure out the car wash and the pre-pay gas pumps at the station close to the smoking area.

Also - sign seen in an Canadian Tire store at the returns desk:
                      "Attention Customers.
Please treat our staff with respect.
Abusive treatment/comments will result in ejection from the store"

                      My thoughts:
"For every sign/warning, there's an idiot, or an idiot with a lawyer behind it".

In cuffs for attempted murder I would say, though you would probably be in hospital for some time as well.

Never thought I'd see that sign in a Canadian Tire. Must have been a legal issue to get it.
