  • Two tenths of a cent per hour

I got my first paycheck for my new job today and found out I make more than I thought I was going to... Instead of getting the expected $x.00 an hour, I'm actually getting $x.002! Every five hours -- ka-ching! -- another unexpected penny.

My biggest worry is, "Who came up with this idea?" Someone else got paid to figure out exactly how much I should get paid.

"$x.00 is boring... but I can't make it $x.01... I know! I'll throw an extra two tenths of cent in there!"

"$x.00 isn't enough... let's raise the starting pay... I think two tenths of a cent will do it."

Given the company I work for, I can imagine this decision was a compromise reached by several different committees, and then approved by numerous managers, directors, high muck-a-mucks, fearless leaders, etc. before it finally showed up on my check.

I, of course, had to do the math: It's an extra $4.16 a year for me.

don't worry, the starting pay is low, but they give you good raises. Heck, in 19 years, you could be making an extra whole penny an hour!
