my store has certain items that come with a gift card as a promotion, things have been going pretty smoothly, people are fine with not being able to use it on the same transaction as the movie, the only problem is they FUBAR the self checks. 2 out of every 3 of those that go through completely freeze up the unit, to the point where I have to reboot(at least there's not a lock on that door) which takes 5-10 minutes and obviously loses everything that has been scanned, and I have to scan everything at my register which was designed for suspended transactions(paying with a check, sometimes credit cards don't work right at self checks, and certain electronic items have to be done at my podium) and checking out associates lunches and snacks. when a customer has already scanned half of her 40 items this is a real PITA.

A couple days ago I had to key in a credit card, which is a PITA process, but normally not a huge deal. You have to put a piece of paper in the check reader and have it print something for the cash office. I did that and and the check reader took it in crooked and jammed itself up, freezing my register in the process. My manager said it would correct itself if we gave it enough time. After a couple minutes he came back and it was still doing the same thing, so he called his supervisor over, who said to reboot it, and he called his supervisor over(we're a big store, we have lots of levels of management) to find out if it had gone through, which it doesn't do until you hit the last button. The customer was cool as hell about it, I kind of wish it had happened to an asshole. I would have gotten bitched out big time, but I'm an big kid, it wouldn't be the first time a customer had ever bitched me out. Would you rather inconvenience an asshole that's just going to come in a piss off the staff so everyone gets inferior service, which makes the customers suckier, and keeps the workers in a bad mood, giving bad service,(I mentioned I can handle it, and I wouldn't have to feel bad for the asshole) or inconvenience someone who's going to come in and be respectful enough that the staff stays in a good mood, giving the best service you're going to get out of them? It's not that it really matters, they'll both be back, but you can't like seeing these annoying things happen to good people

Heh, yeah I encountered the GC thing for the first time on Sunday. I've never seen us do this special, so it confused the hell out of me. Real simple to do, but the customer of course asked if she could use the GC on that same purchase. I politely told her no, but I really wanted to ask her if she was kidding. Why do I get the feeling we'll be seeing more specials like this?

Really? That sucks.us When you reboot our registers (including Sco) The transaction isn't lost at all. Then again we do have at least 2 or 3 levels of backup at the store level alone...

SG15Z-my company doesn't back them up that i know of, just every transaction is saved at the store level for I don't know how long, and at corporate for 2 years. It's faster just to rescan everything than to wait for the register or look it up in the computer, even if we could

I know what you mean. I hate when we screw things up for cool people and feel guilty when they are nice about it.

But there's a naughty little part of me that is secretly pleased when things go wrong for assholes. I know I'm going to have to deal with their anger, but it's worth it to see an asshole have things not go his way.
