The library system is suppose to carry 22 copies of Confessions of a video vixen. Unfortunately, only 7 are circulating. There are copies that have been checked out 2006, 2007, 2008 that have not been returned. I check those patron's records. Maybe 2 checked out only this book, others have several books checked out besides this one that have not been returned. One person has this book checked out on their kids' card, so besides Dora the Explorer big book of stories, they have Zane books checked out. Over $300 worth of fines.
OH, and all these people had notes on their records saying that mail was returned since they moved without a forwarding address.
I hate this book because there are not enough copies. I had one guy come up to me wanting to know when it was his turn to get the book. Unfortunately you are in a waiting list for 6 months. After 6months you get removed from the list. So I had to put the guy back on the list, since more than 6 months passed, and he was pissed.
Yesterday a woman comes up asking for the book. I tell her all the copies are checekd out and if she wants to be on the hold list, she would be the 23 hold. This is for the whole library system.
Guess what she asked.
woman: is there any copies at other libraries?
I guess the phrase "library system" is vague for her.
Looking at the record, I noticed that one copy was on the hold shelf since 1-21-09. Now books are kept on the hold shelf (ready to be picked up) for 10 days. I call the library and tell them the patron doesn't want the book. The library doesn't take it off the hold shelf. I then noticed that there is a note saying to hold the book until 2-21-09.
I hate that patrons call and ask us to hold stuff for a long time, esp. when there are 22 holds on the 7 books there are. And one book was checked out until 3-13-09. Why? A person can have a book out for 6 weeks, but if there are holds we dont' let them have it for more than the usual 2 weeks. Did the Circ. person who checked it out to the patron not notice? A pop-up would inform them not to extend time. Did the patron brow-beat tha Circ. person? Probably.
NO point in ordering more, since they will be ripped off or never returned.
At least I made all the cards expired for the people who havn't returned the book. The record is still there, just now they can't use the computers without renewing their card.
