I have been unemployed since January 15th. And so far, I only had two interviews. And have not heard anything back from either. This sucks. Used to, I would be laid off for about two months at max. but not now.

I can't guarantee everyone who has had cut hours can get unemployment, but what I can guarantee is it won't hurt to try. I'm not sure about part time employees, but I would venture to say anyone who is a full time employee at a job and has had to take any kind of involuntary hour cut, DO try for unemployment, especially if you have the same schedule every week and you are losing the same amount of hours every week. You really need to see a neurologist. - Wagegoth

Quoth NightWatch View PostYup, but unless the company has evidence (such as write ups) that you deserved to get fired, you can file for unemployment. Around here the reason they don't fire bad employees is because the company will have to deal with paying for the unemployment claim. So they do sneaky stuff like cutting hours until the employee just quits. Quitting would forfeit you right to file for unemployment. (I'm sure there are exceptions).
At my last job, they kept warning me I wouldn't last much longer for various "errors" I'd committed (the quotes are because I didn't think I'd actually made the mistakes but my manager felt otherwise) and the stress of my job being held over my head constantly caused me to turn in my notice, they kindly booted me out of the door much earlier than two weeks.
The thing is, I chose to quit because I thought leaving voluntary looks better on ones employment history than being fired.

GameStore boss fired me for "mistakes [that] were made". I have a strong suspicion that "mistakes" = "I don't know exactly what's being done, I'm too lazy to ask and too impatient to listen". I wasn't eligible for unemployment because I didn't have enough hours/hadn't made enough in the past year or some such BS.
In my state, proper termination procedures still need to be followed (two documented verbal warnings, then a writeup--which were never done).
Leaving voluntarily IMO does look better, although in some cases a firing could actually be a layoff which still wouldn't be as bad."I am quite confident that I do exist."

My being let go from GameStore could be either. He didn't realize until things were falling into place what kind of investment was required...shortly prior to that point there was a good deal of miscommunication and unreasonable expectations (I can't sell what we don't have)."I am quite confident that I do exist."

My mom's dealing with something called "furlough" at her job. Basically, the factory that she works at has not-so-nicely asked her to take a week-long, unpaid vacation every month. She hasn't felt it too harshly because my brother is living with her and picking up the slack somewhat with his assistant manager job and she's getting unemployment for the week she's out of work.
With the number of times that place has jerked her around over the years*, I still don't know why she hasn't looked elsewhere for employment. I guess she's scared that she's not going to get that good of a salary in the crappy town she still insists on living in.

* Sexual harassment, verbal abuse, unsafe working conditions that resulted in several injuries, passing her over for promotions she was qualified for because the managers didn't feel her co-workers would listen to a woman...
