The child care agency where I work is on the fourth floor of a medical building (dentist & doctor's offices, etc.). It's an odd fit - we're literally the only non-medical office there. But that's neither here nor there.
While working one day, some of the employees noticed the smell of cigarette smoke coming from outside our door, which is directly in front of the door to the stairwell. When the receptionist opened the door to the stairwell, she found a homeless man there, lying on the ground and smoking. She tried asking him to leave, but he wouldn't budge.
She called the cops. But by the time they arrived, he was gone.
The receptionist suspected that the stairwell was this homeless man's makeshift residence. It wasn't the first time she smelled smoke coming from there - just the first time she discovered him there - so she also suspected that he was sleeping/staying on different levels of each stairwell. Perhaps, upon being discovered sleeping at one level, he moved on to the next, rather than just leave.
The receptionist also said that she had seen him peeing near the dumpster that's close to the underground parking garage.
Anyway, the next time he was discovered in our stairwell, the receptionist called the cops. While we waited for them to come, she discovered that the homeless man had left. But then the police called the office to tell her that they found him elsewhere in the building...and that they were taking him to the hospital, because he was overdosing.
Well, he must have had a quick recovery, because guess who showed up again the following week? We called the cops AGAIN, and AGAIN by the time they came...he was gone.
I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of him...
