So, at the food-place I work at, I usually work counter(ringing people out), fountain (shakes) or drive through.

Whenever I'm on counter, my duties are to keep the foyer area presentable and clean, wait on customers who sit at the bar, ring people out, and handle phone calls (such as complaints, questions, or call-in orders).

I do all that, plus keep my behind-the-counter area completely spotless, remove empty bread-trays for the grill guys and take them to the back storage, and handle customer complaints.

When I have the time, and if the servers are especially busy, I will also handle seating the customers and getting them their drinks, along with bussing and cleaning empty tables.

I do this to help the servers out, because I understand they're often rushed and busy, and it's no skin off my nose to help the customers get seated more quickly (because guess who gets yelled at when the service is too slow? That's right, Counter Girl).

All this, for minimum wage and maybe $10 in tips a night (bar customers are shitty tippers*).

The other day, I was working counter. It was pretty slow, no major issues, just a couple people waiting for a carry out which was waiting on shakes. I see a dirty table and go bus and clean it. I take the tip off the table and hand it to the server who was coming to bus the tables, saying "Don't worry I got the table, here's the tip they left you."

The server, a sweet girl named Ashley, said, "Oh, wow. Thanks! Here!" and split the tip with me, saying "You bussed and cleaned the table, you ought to have some of this."

Understand, I did nothing to imply I was expecting a part of her tips. The customer left it for her, it is HER money, as far as I see it.

Well, later on I was bussing another table so that I could seat these old people at the door. The server whose table it was starts FREAKING at me when I go to hand him the tip, snapping "Don't get your hopes up, I'm not giving you any of MY tips!"

I blink, looking totally confused because seriously, where the HELL did that attitude come from? I just helped him out and made his day a little easier, and he's bitching me out? He goes on to make this rant about how I shouldn't be "stealing tips from the servers because i make minimum wage and they don't, they NEED this money etcetcetc."

First off, you little j-off, I hear you servers talking about pulling in $100-$200 in tips every night.
That's my paycheck for the entire freaking WEEK. Don't even pull any of that bull about "poor little underpaid servers".

Secondly, I did not steal his money. I gave it to him so that a customer wouldn't be a sneaky ass and take it. I could do what the managers do, which is bus and clean the table, then seat people at it and leave the tip for the server to get later. But I've seen shitty customers steal the tip for themselves, so I hand it to the server.
And I never said ANYTHING about expecting a share of the server's money. Would it be nice if they'd toss a dollar or so my way, since I'm helping them out? Sure. Do I expect them to? No, because what I'm doing isn't in my job description, it's just me helping out to make things run more quickly.

What the hell was his issue? Did I violate some weird server code of conduct by making sure his money got to him?
Will someone who works in foodservice please tell me if I'm doing something seriously wrong here? I thought it was being helpful, and hell, my managers appreciate and have told me to keep up with bussing tables during busy times.
I'm new here, so if you have any questions, feel free to message me. I'll probably change this later when I find something funny to put here.

Personally, I vote for the frigid approach. Stare him down and tell him in a cold, bitter voice that unlike some people, you like to do the gracious thing by helping out. You never asked and never implied anything else. And that now it's a good thing you know to spend your time helping people who would appreciate it.

I vote he busses his own tables from here on. If he can't accept a favor graciously, then he gets no favors at all.
