  • Anybody work third shift?

We're starting an actual overnight shift at the cable company. I volunteered mostly because I'm tired of working weekends... right now I work both Saturdays and Sundays, and even in my former job, I worked two out of three weekends. Since I have enough rank to get a Monday through Thursday schedule on overnights, I decided to take it. (There's also a hefty shift differential.)

Now that I've formally committed to it, I'm starting to get nervous. It's not the hours so much -- during those times when I don't have to follow a schedule, I usually wind up going to bed around sunrise anyway.

The problem is that I'm starting to worry about who's going to call in at 3AM. I have this vision of people coming home from the bars all properly pissed and ready to exorcise their demons with some demented drunk blogging -- only to find themselves stymied by an internet connection gone bad. It's hard enough dealing with my customers when they're (presumably) sober.

Anybody else deal with the public during the wee hours?

Don't forget the people who must have their porn in the wee morning hours. I'm sure they'll supplying some pretty interesting stories in the future.

I haven't dealt with many people at those hours myself. Other than telling people who pound on the door to get lost because we were closed or the junkies who hang out in the parking lot at that time.

Unless your calls are recorded for "quality control" or some other crap, you can mess with the drunks and they won't remember!

Messing with the porn-deprived and drunks... two of my favorite things. I was a bit nervous, but now I'm starting to look to forward to it again.

This is going to be my first-time working third shift and dealing with people.

After Black Friday, we don't close until 11 and open at 6 or 7.

A week or two before Christmas, I think we're going to be open until midnight.

Should be interesting having to dodge customers while stocking trucks.

I'd rather do night shift in a call center than in a convenience store again (did graveyard at 7-11). At least your drunks aren't going to be making messes that you have to clean up or physically menacing you, and you won't be dealing with shoplifters who fail to notice a quite large mirror that gave me a great view of that six-pack they just tried to shove in their jacket.

Days, evenings, nights... I always prefer the distance of four locked doors between me and the general public.

i love working third shift. i've worked it for over year. i like not having to deal with all the customers that come in during the daytime. besides on third shift managment tends to stay off your back more.

I wouldn't worry too much, TNT. After a few nights, you'll come to love it. Working overnights in a call centre is great fun, especially since usually there are no sups around. It's funny when they ask for a sup, and you tell them they'll have to call back in the morning, or you can take down their info to get a callback. Amazing how many will never believe it.

There can be great fun had....you just have to find it. Enjoy it!
