    As background...
Aside from my other job responsibilities, I take care of the keys at the college I work for. I also have been taking over more of the things with the locks despite that being in the Physical Plant department before. I've really been enjoying it. The is just something about working with the locks that I really enjoy. The previous guy didn't keep up on stuff much and it's become very apparent. Our key system has submaster. For instance, there might be a submaster that opens all the offices in a department and one that opens the classrooms, outside of the individual door keys. It's becoming more apparent that the submasters were never adjusted when rooms changed purposes and it's been making things more difficult sometimes.

Recently I started looking through the locks and seeing what needed to be updated and which locks could be reused and such and then how much it would cost us. There were going to be 19 locks in the first batch. 60-70 locks total. It costs 43.50 to repin a lock. That would be around $3,000 total. There is no way we can justify spending that much. But I happened to find a locksmith school in my state that does basic locksmith type stuff. It only costs a thousand. I figured even that would be too much and that there was no way either would happen and that I'd have to make do with the current locks.

Yesterday morning I went in to talk to my boss and I jokingly mentioned the locksmith school, figuring we'd both laugh and then talk about how to manage with the locks we had. Instead he got very interested in the school and such. As of today, the enrollment forms have been sent and my hotel room is just about completely booked. I think I'm still a bit in shock. I honestly didn't expect them to send me but I'm thrilled.

As of the end of January, I'll know how to pick locks, repin locks, and tons more! The bounciness and big grin is probably going to last for a long time.

Smart boss. For about $1000 + hotel and food, he saves all the money for repinning locks and whatnot until you move on. Bonus, you get an additional skillset to add to your experience should you decide to look for future employment. Not a bad deal for everyone involved.

I think that was probably the deciding bit. After all, if it was going to be $3000, just this one time, and you can do it even twice, then they're saving tons of money. Probably not the full $5,000, as I'm sure there'll be material costs, but still, a LOT.

      So, congrats, and have fun!

True but I figured he wouldn't be able to convince his boss. Sometimes when you go high up enough the spending to save money type thing doesn't work. If he didn't think he could get them to be ok with it then there was no way and so I figured it would be too much money either way. Plus the actual training is being paid for by the other department who is in charge of the lock money and my department is paying for the rest. The other department is bad about spending money sometimes.

Congratulations, i'd love to be you right about now. Hmmm, i wonder if they're doing this because of some connection with the school, prolly not accreditation, but some kind of handshake agreement that helps the locksmith school.

Nope I'm actually the one who brought the school to the attention of my boss. It's about 3 hours north of us or so and I hadn't even heard of them till this month. They're mostly all for it because we have to spend a lot of money at the locksmith to fix what the previous guy should have been taking care of all along.

I've gotten word that I'm officially enrolled for sure. My bosses are all excited about the stuff I'll be bringing back since I get a lockpicking set (1 for doors and 1 for cars actually) and a pinning kit and a bunch of other stuff that will be useful.

That's so cool! I'm glad management sprung for school for you, and I'm really happy that you get to do something you enjoy. Nothing's better than doing something fun at work.
