I think you can definitely do this job My ex-bf does something similar (he's a community supervisor for a company that runs group homes for mentally retarded adults) and while it can be draining, he finds it very rewarding... at least he did last time I spoke to him.... It was the type of job that no matter how bad his supervisor treated him, he'd never leave because he genuinely CARED about the clients and loved the work he did. (and his supervisor treated him pretty badly... but that's what you get for having an affair with the supervisor! okay, I'm wayyyy off topic now)
The thing is, you WANT to make a difference, and you have the youth and the energy to care. I think you're not only qualified, but you'll do a fantastic job, and you'll come to love it, even if it can be unpleasant at times.
