Apparently last night around midnight giant oak tree decided to go vertical. However if fell more or less parallel to the road, and took several other smaller trees whit it. In the process of falling it took about 8 of it's cousins, in the form of utility poles, with it.
The night crew manager, followed procedure, and secured all the freezer and cooler doors and called the power Company and the after hours Corporate Emergency Call Center. Around 12:30 SM arrives, on their way they saw the damage and talked whit a FF on scene who was waiting fro the Power CO to kill the power so they can put out the trees. They tell SM it will be at least 2 hours to clear the mess and asses the damage.
Anyway time passes and dry ice is brought in to keep the refrigerated cases cold until more information is available. Well, they find out several transforms were destroyed and underground lines we damaged and 8 poles needed replacing, plus all new above ground wires. It's not going to be a easy fix, up to 12 hours, and some dry ice will not keep the food from spoiling. SM calls Corp, and asks to get two reefer trailers for the refrigerated food. We can hold the main freezer with dry ice for 16-18 hours if needed with minimal loss. Finally Corp aggrees and will send the trailers, by 3:30 AM. SM leaves the nigt crew to watch the coolers and stock dry goods.
Around 4 AM the trailers arrive, all nice and cool. SM, Night crew and a few early employees begin grabbing shopping carts and loading the up and stiffing them in the trailers. By 4:30 AM they are finishing up loading the first trailer whit it goes silent. They go outside and check. They forgot to put fuel in the tank.
So, another call. "Whoops our bad, they used that trailer the previous day and the driver never refueled it. Sorry. Do you need more fuel?" Nope, we'll just let it all spoil. By 5:30, the get a very unhappy fuel truck driver out to refuel the trailer. SM asks them to top off the second. He does, that one only had about 5 gallons in the tank.
Well, after all that, we still opened, late though with a big sign at both doors "Due to a prolonged power outage, we are not selling perishable food." Gues how many people wanted something frozen or refrigerated. Almost everyone. NO I;n NOT opening the freezer door, or digging thru 2 53 ft trailers full of stuff for you cream cheese.
We finally got power back at 1 PM, and with that a army of every available manager and employee for nearby stores to restock coolers when they began to get cold enough.
