  • One of the things I like about my job.

As the title says there's a thing about my job I like: counting the tills at close. Why you ask? Well, yesterday I found a 1959 dime in the till. Why is that a big deal you ask? Dimes, quarters and halves made 1964 and before were made with 90% silver, thus that dime is worth between $1 and $1.5 based on the spot price of silver. Soon as I saw that I quickly replaced it with a modern dime and put it in my safe with my other silver. Over the years I've found dimes, quarters, halves (including a Ben Franklin half) and Canadian silver quarters in the till, along with some silver $1 certificates, all swapped out with modern currency. I've also found many wheat pennies, and old Canadian cents in the till, and one time going through a roll of pennies I found a 1908 Indian Head penny.

So have any of you found any interesting money in your tills?

I found a 1906 Barber dime, worth 4 bucks. Also found a kroner, a franc, and a whole lot of canadian coins. Also a few pre-50 nickles and pennies.

When I was a cashier, I got some good coins. I got some 1898 silver dollars, some Liberty dimes, a steel penny, wheat pennies and lots of silver coins.

I also collected a lot of $2 bills. Some were very old, and had been part of collections.

just remember that in the US nickles with mint dates of 1942 - 1945 were like 75% silver as nickle was more valuable during WW II (though too many old silver coins WERE melted down during that era)

The best time I had was when I worked at the gas station. the bank sent us like 5 ENTIRE rolls of silver quarters. I am sooooo glad I had enough money on me to buy most of them. then a week later I went to the tobacco shop next to one of the minor casino branches and THEY had handfulls of silver quaters

Someone somewhere turned in a boatload of silver quarters and it got rolled up and sold to several banks in my area.

other than the rare silver dimes, quarters, halfs and wheat pennies, every 6 months or so a (different) customer would pay for their gas with OLD Silver and Gold certificate $1 and $5 bills. most were still in reasonably good condition (got those stashed away)

oldest coins I ever got were a 1917 Lincoln penny and early 1900's Buffalo Nickle (could not determine the mint date as it has rubbed off)
I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.
