Some people just don't get the simple concept that debit cards and checks take money from the same source - your checking account. That's just too complex for very simple people.
Or some people do get that concept but try to float the checks while not actually having the money yet.

With more and more retailers switching to processing checks electronically, the people who float will be in for a rude surprise.

Before I was let go last week for allegedly providing poor customer service, I saw a lot of those types. It was absolutely ridiculous that people would write a check for an amount under $10. Even with electronic processing, I'm sure that they got their share of bad checks. In many areas, it's usually people above 50 who make us most of the check writers. Here, it's a good mix of all demographics. I think many of the younger check writers live paycheck to paycheck and don't have regular access to computers so they can check their balances.

At my previous employer, there were more safeguards in place to prevent that from happening including requiring you to enter the customer DL number if it was a new account and if they had no written a check in a while. The system also verified that there was enough money in the account to cover the check. During the two and a half years I was there, very few bad checks came through, less than five. I had a number of checks that the system declined and most were from customers whom I had never seen before. The few that were from regulars usually got the okay from a supervisor and they overrode the decline.

I'm still bitter about being let go because I know I was one of the better employees. I was the only regular checker who was a non-smoker and actually made an effort to be as efficient as possible instead of chatting with every customer for at least five minutes. As a customer, I'm not overly fond of inefficient and overly chatty employees. I prefer to have my transactions done in as efficient manner as possible. I would think that most customers would appreciate efficiency in cashiers, especially when there are lines, but apparently that wasn't good enough customer service according to management.

I just had the bad luck of having a customer who felt I didn't kiss their ass enough and complained to the store manager. The only real reason I worked their was for the insurance because I made more at my day job in an office. I got it taken care for the most part before it gets cut off.

I'm relieved to be out of retail for the time being. I'm sleeping much better now that I'm not getting home past midnight and getting less than 6 hours of sleep some nights. I'm also drinking less pop than I was and overall feeling much better having a more consistent 9 to 5 schedule. I have another job working at a coffee shop/bookstore and set my own hours there. Even dealing with the dust at the bookstore, my allergies are under control and I haven't gotten sick again from them.
