  • I Knew it

I work in the cage at a Casino in Nevada. Now, I've been trying to find the laws on minors. I always thought minors were not allowed anywhere near the cage and must keep walking on the gaming floor.

Now, we're being told that yes people can have minors with them if they are making change or cashing travel checks. Non-gaming activity. Now, what puzzles me is--what's the point of us carding if minors can be up there now? And WHY would they do that?

I believe this is going to cause SO many problems. They can cash out a travel check but if they have a chip or a ticket we turn them away until the child is away. And we have to inform the supervisor everytime a such a transaction takes place.

Isn't it against gaming law?? I'm trying to look it up now but I'm having trouble finding anything.

But I get the non-gaming thing but wouldn't the minors see other people's transactions that are of gaming? It's so confusing.

Does your state have a gaming commission (What am I saying, its Nevada, of COURSE it has a gaming commission)? I think your best bet might be to ring them up and ask them exactly what the position is on minors loitering at the cage.

Or if you are a union employee (I can't remember which employement groups have unions in nevada). ask your union. If that fails go with BFG's advice and get the answer straight from the gaming commision.

Should I be over concerned or just trust that they know what they're doing? I mean what if I make a bit stink about this and it turns out I was just simply wrong?

        I'm not a union employee.

If I wanted to pursue this-- How would I? How do you get a hold of the gaming commission?

I know it's not a big deal but in doing this it kind of throws me out of balance. I'm so used to carding people and having to let them know its not okay for children to be up there. Now it's suddenly okay? It's odd. I don't know of any other casino that allows this. One casino can't just bend the rules. Maybe they found a loophole.

Having children come up to the cage is more common than people realize. It's done all the time and when I first started there I was told we'd be fired on the spot if a minor was present during a transaction, so I'm a little shocked at the whole thing.

I personally don't have kids but I do feel like a casino is no place for children. It's a place where people get drunk, yell, smoke and are usually pretty cranky. They may loose business with the older crowds not wanting a child around while they are in line.

It's a known fact, children cry and whine. No kids wants to be in a line. I'm a bit selfish but I'm worried a child may start screaming and I'll not be able to concentrate on a huge pay out. Or worse comes to worse what if a customer tells them to shut up and things get ugly?

I may be reading way too much into this but there are going to be a lot of new problems with this.

Another idea for you. Who did you hear about this new regulation/rule from? Could you ask for clarification from a supervisor or from a head of security type person. Explain to them that you simply want clarification due to the difference in the rule now for security sake, you want to be able to do the best job that you can and you want to cover your own butt legally at the same time.

I can be a bit anal about things like this, and if i were in your shoes, I'd want to know EXACTLY what the law said on this issue, so that it doesn't all turn pear-shaped.

You can reach the Nevada Gaming Commission on (775) 684-7750.

let me get this right... minors are allowed on a gaming floor in nevada?

here in australia if a minor so much as sets foot on a gaming floor it's trouble. theres a fine for the minor, and a fine for the casino. as well as that security on the entrance the minor came through will be disiplined. when i cashier, i don't have to card, as they would have been carded on entrance.

all resurants on the gaming floor will be, because of the above regulations 18+.

Yeah, kids can walk through, but they can't loiter. That's the difference. I worked at Harvey's in Lake Tahoe for a summer, but I don't really recall a lot of kids around. Probably because I worked 1am-9am.

                    It gets worse

It was a bit disturbing to have to deal with minors who wanted change for non-gaming purposes but NOW they have done something that I feel is truly illegal.

Now if a parent brings their children up with them to cash out for gaming (chips, tickets, etc) purposes, it's now OKAY! We were told that our cage isn't in a gaming area! Now, that seems completely crazy to me because we do gaming transactions, we are surrounded by money, the tables are a few feet away and why do we ever card anymore?!

To me, we should be able to have minors work in the cage now. I mean, really, if we're not considered part of gaming...

I think its stupid and it can't possibly be legal. The cage manager decided it was "okay." And I was told all this by the lead supervisor on my shift. She said that they looked at all the policies and laws and I guess found loopholes.

I don't know if I should be making a big stink about this but it just kinds of throws me out of balance. It takes away everything I've ever known in a casino environment.

Honestly, I'd prefer not to dish out twenty grand to someone with a child present. It's distracting enough having surveilance watch, the supervisor, and the adult. I'm worried that the child may grab at the money or be screaming and crying and I may mess up. Is that bad of me to think?

Did I miss a new law being passed!?

At any casino I've been to, if you are under 18, you aren't allowed off the main paths. Even if you are with a parent, you cannot leave the path. As for cashing chips and the like, I don't know anything about those rules.

Seriously, if they're switching policy this completely, CALL THE GAMING COMMISSION. Cover your butt. Just ask them, is this permissable. You probably don't even have to identify yourself, or the location you're specifically enquiring about if you phrase it as a general inquiery about the law. The last thing any of us wants is your next thread to be talking about how you were fined/fired because of minors being involved with the transactions.

I went to Atlantic City the week after I turned 21; my friend and I got carded 5 times (twice by the same guy ) just walking around the floor for a couple of hours and playing slots. Never been to Nevada but why on Earth would you take a child to a casino in the first place? Get a babysitter or find something more kid-friendly to do!

The new Las Vegas is trying to be more "family friendly" from what I understand. Never been there, but how can you make a gambling-centered enterprise more "family friendly?"

Here is the full text of gaming laws in effect in New Jersey. Read up and educate yourself, and keep it handy. So the next time they tell you to do something sketchy you can show them the regulations they are breaking and why you will not put your butt on the line.

The only words you said that I understood were "His", "Phone" and "Ya'll". The other 2 paragraphs worth was about as intelligible as a drunken Teletubby barkin' come on's at a Hooter's waitress.
