  • Homeless Guy Flips Out At Pizza Joint Staff After I Buy Him Some Food ( Language )

This one requires a bit of an explanation.

A while back I was at a local mom-and-pop pizza place when this homeless guy, an older black gentleman, walks in. After asking several folks for change, he makes his way over to me. I feel bad for the guy, hand the guy behind the counter a $5, and tell him to give the guy whatever that will buy.

Homeless guy was so overcome with gratitude that he GRABS me in a big bear hug and thanks me repeatedly. I'm glad he was thankful, but eeew! His smell, a combination of sweat, B.O., urine, stale tobacco smoke, and cheap booze, nearly knocked me out. I told him "no problem bro", but the whole time I'm cringing.

Manager sees this and tells the guy to quit bothering his other customers. At this point, homeless guy snaps. "What? WHAT??? WHAT!!! MAN I WASN'T EVEN TALKING TO YOU! I'M DEALING WITH THIS MAN HERE! I'M A MAN, DAMMIT! MY NAME IS ----- ------! YOU MOTHERFUCKERS COME OVER TO THIS COUNTRY AND TREAT THE PEOPLE LIVIN HERE LIKE SHIT AND I'M TIRED OF IT!!!!

A few minutes later they get him to calm down. He takes his food ( that I paid for ) and leaves. The poor young girl wiping the tables ( it's a family business ) is visibly shaken and doesn't come out again the whole time I'm there.

When my food is ready, I ask the manager if I could wish my hands. As soon as I get home I peel my clothes off and toos everything- including my jacket- into the dirty clothes hamper.

Oh my gosh ... I'm kinda surprised you still had an appetite after that ...

Next time, make sure you've got a table between yourself and Grateful Homeless Guy before you tell him you're buying his meal, LOL.

Better yet, be finished with your own meal and have one foot out the door!

(Seriously, kudos to your for kindness. )

Having worked as a security guard downtown, I know how dicey it can be dealing with the homeless sometimes.

I expect the store owners would have preferred you take him and his food outside, but really, there's no way you could have predicted him flipping out like that. Good on you for trying, and I'm sorry it didn't work out so well.

I imagine doing social work with the homeless is simultaneously the most rewarding and the most frustrating experience, just because of the unpredictability of it.

Right in one. I've done some charity work with the homeless, doing medical screenings at a homeless shelter. At least there they can bathe on a daily basis, since one of the goals of the shelter is to help the residents find full time work or get into job training and an apartment. Can't do either one if you're all stinky.

Still, the OP did a nice thing for the guy, and I expect his assessment of the owner/manager was probably spot on. Kudos to you, sir!
They say that God only gives us what we can handle. Apparently, God thinks I'm a bad ass.
