I would think a medical receptionist, while not a medical person herself, would have enough savvy to not believe that woman's ravings. Hopefully, she tipped the doctor off and the doctor did the necessary tests.

I could be wrong on this one, but I do remember that some states require drug testing for pregnant women after a certain point. If they pass the first round (given that most drugs can be detected for a while after use), they are generally ok, if they fail, they are more closely monitored by a social worker as well as the doc.

Doctors I do believe are also mandatory reporters down here, but I'm not sure if it extends to pregnant women.

In the US, in some states, delivering a baby positive for drugs can result in criminal prosecution. In all states, it gets CPS involved.

Thing is, they don't test every baby; just the ones who's moms admit to current and recent drug use.

Hmm... over here, the first thing that happens when you show up at the doctor's and say "I think I am pregnant" is that they take a shitload of blood tests and test them for EVERYTHING. Rubella, hepatitis, HIV, various STDs, the works. So a pregnant drug addict would be spotted and monitored heavily on from the start.
