  • THAT'S why you're holding up the line?!

Last weekend, I stopped by Lowe's to pick up a single item -- some bags for my Shop-Vac. There were maybe four registers open, and they all had about the same amount of people waiting in line, except one that had one couple waiting. I got in that one, which turned out to be a mistake...

It looked like all their items had been rung up and bagged, but there was some sort of hold-up with them paying. The guy's credit card wouldn't go through. After several attempts, the cashier noticed that it was a Boscov's store card, which are only good at said stores. The cashier tried to explain it to the guy several times, but he just wasn't getting it. Finally, he gave her another card to use, and it went through without a problem.

The guy looked like he may not have spoken a lot of English, so I could forgive him not understanding that the card he tried to use was only good at the store that issued it, and I could even forgive the confusion, although I was getting somewhat annoyed that I was trying to pay for one damn item and get out of there. But he knew he was holding up the line, and he knew he had another credit card. If the first card wasn't working for whatever reason, why didn't he just try the other card, instead of holding up the damn line?

Something I learned years ago was never, ever to get in line behind a couple. Especially not at a bank, but even at a grocery store can be a problem.

I guess maybe he wanted to put his purchase on a particular card (probably afraid the other one would decline), but if it didn't work, just use the second one for Chrissake!
