What I still remember is in McDonalds, instead of the burger, fries and coke you got in the US, you could get a beer!

Some theaters in the US you can go to special showings that serve food and alcohol, and you have to be 21 or older to get in. My mom thought people would be more respectful, due to the lack of children and teenagers plus it's more expensive. She was very wrong.

There's a story I read somewhere about an American tourist in Germany (I think?). He was shocked that you could actually get beer at a Mickey D's, and started ranting about how awful it was. One of the local customers looked at him and said--"Wait, you actually go to McDonald's for the FOOD?"

The tourist complaint-du-jour in my state is that you can't buy alcohol at a grocer/gas station.

In PA, beer sales are only allowed at bars, restaurants or licensed beverage distributors. (hard liquor can only come from a "State Store" You can get a glass of wine at a restaurant, but you can't buy the bottle there ) You can't get a six pack at the c-store, they aren't hiding it somewhere, they just don't have it, no we aren't kidding, well, that "Stupid" law has been in effect for almost a century now and resisted all public efforts to change it, you aren't a resident so your opinion doesn't even COUNT.

Had to stand in line behind one such jerk the other day at the corner store because it took THREE times for the staff to explain to him he couldn't buy a six pack from them because they don't have any, and were pointing across the street to an open pizza place that DID have them, but our hero was adamant he wasn't going across the street to buy one when he SHOULD be able to do it HERE!

Judging from the accent he used, the Confederacy has turned one of their idiots loose on us.... and the fact he was a bit slurry in said accent made me wonder if beer was the right thing to be giving him anyway....

Colorado law is that grocery stores are limited to 3.5 beer. Anything stronger, and you need to go to a liquor store ( there are some grocery stores here that carry wine, but I think there's a lot more hoops you have to jump through to do that and a lot of stores just don't want to deal with it). I had one person, upon being told we don't sell alcohol in our lobby and our hotel does not have a bar, ask me "how do you people live?" Well, there's the fact that Colorado has the highest number of breweries per capita (so we're not exactly a dry state) and there's the fact that most of us can function without drinking for a day or two. There's also the fact that it's very difficult to find a grocery store that doesn't have a liquor store right next to it. Here you can even buy alcohol on Sunday, so stop whining and walk the half a block down the street to the liquor store if you need to drink so badly.

Those two items are not necessarily related. My information is a few years old, so things may have changed. Moore County in Tennessee is dry (i.e. retail sale of alcohol is prohibited). Biggest employer in the county? The Jack Daniels distillery.

A town near us is sort of like that. Dry town, but they call it restaurant row... there must be something like 20 - 30 restaurants in town and none of them can serve alcohol. It's all BYOB which isn't the end of the world, but some places need that extra income from selling tasty beverages.

They really, really, really don't. Like drunk enough to hump a tree stump/fish from a tree over land (I wish I had never overheard that story on the school bus) level of no standards.

I am very sorry one of them escaped, but sometimes if the family tree doesn't branch enough, they kinda all start to look alike. Really makes taking a head count difficult without the ear tags and GPS.

My state is one of those that you gotta be 21 to buy booze. Problem isn't that. The problem is the state is made up of a patchwork of dry (can't sell booze period) and wet (can sell booze) counties. And you aren't getting booze on Sundays, no matter the county. You can always tell it's Saturday or Monday by the number of wrecks happening from the dry county residents going to the wet counties to buy their booze.. which they then pop open for the ride home.... And that's the ones that plan for the booze outage of Sunday.
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.

I had fun with drinking age/laws in a college trip to Barcelona. As I was a mature student, the tutors let me and my dorm-mates alone. (Tutor "Er, I'm going to the other tutor's room next door with my tooth glass so I can borrow her mouth wash?" (I'm not bringing my glass from the bathroom so I can drink wine with her, honest guv.)).
Everything went fine until young blond dorm-mate tried again to get the hang of the local currency after buying a round of drinks in the nearest bar (We're in Barcelona, the bar was called Robin Hood and had horse brasses on display, we could have been at home.).
I'm always happy for people to learn more, so we sat her down with the drinks she'd just bought, and asked her what colour cash she'd used to buy the round, so we could work out what she'd spent, and explain that in non-forien money. Turned out, she'd come back from the bar with more money than she'd started with, AND a round of drinks. Followed by the bar manager being very offended that she would not sleep with him (for a small round of drinks? He had low standards!) . Fortunatly her bemusement at his suggestion, plus my looming (I'm around 6 foot and not small) ensured this was merely an entertaining holiday anecdote. (This was a couple of decades ago, I'm sure things are more civilised now.)

That's particularly funny to me right now, cuz at Ramblin' Man, I was able to buy an actual "Royale With Cheese" burger.

Back on topic, we get that with the whole "Challenge 25 policy. People get pissy when carded, declaring angrily, "But the minimum age is 18 and I'm 20!" Soz, but if you look under 25, then you had better have your ID out or no smokes for you!
