I always bring stuff for my kids to occupy themselves with. My youngest Ben, is really attached to his "Play-a-lot" Carebear and brings it *everywhere*. He's only 14 months old too. That and his blankie, and he's set. I just put Ben's name on the cloth tag of his bear. Plus it is not new-looking from all the love he gives it, so I don't think anyone would mistake it.
My oldest loves Thomas and anything related, and he's always got one of them in his hand, so those have come to be labeled as well, just in case.
I don't really have an issue with my boys begging for toys. Even my oldest hasn't had an issue. I don't let him 'carry' anything from the store unless we plan on buying it. Otherwise I WILL have a problem.
