  • Cheesecake!!!!! (longish)

My mall is building several new big stores - Borders, Chicos, PF Chang's...some others. Well, the Cheesecake Factory just opened recently and my friend took me there for my (belated) birthday dinner tonight. <takes bite of creamy creamy cherry cheesecake - hey, I like the classics>

To start with, it's Friday. At the mall. At a newly-opened, popular chain restaurant. One should expect to be waiting a while, especially if you have a larger group. We got there a little after 6pm. Not surprisingly, we had a hell of a time finding a parking space, and there were a lot of people milling around outside the restaurant (apparently their pager thingies don't work at any real distance so going shopping while you wait isn't really an option, unless you're expecting a really long wait). So we fight our way through and put our name in...45 minutes to an hour. So we take our pager and go do a little shopping, planning to be back at 7, which is 5 minutes before the minimum time they quoted.

When we got back, it had been about 35 minutes, and we went back to the desk to make sure they hadn't called us early. They hadn't. While we were waiting to ask this, there was a woman bitching to the poor girl about how long they had waited and I heard the girl tell her that they were the next Party of Six (Po6) and they should be seated in 5-10 minutes, but she can't promise because, well, sometimes people sit longer and they can't control that. (She was very polite about it, though.) My friend checked in and they hadn't called us, so we went back outside for a bit.

When they finally called us (the pagers blink red lights and vibrate), we went in and gave our pager to the somewhat ditzy-sounding blonde at the desk, who said, and I quote, "It shaked?" Yes, it shaked.

So we stepped to the side and it was several minutes before someone finally actually took us to a table. (Things were a little confused; their system is all computerized and most of the people are new, so they are still getting used to it and all.) While we were waiting they were gathering the Party of 6, and we heard the manager tell the Woman who Bitched that as soon as they were seated he would put some appetizers in for them. Yes, they got free apps for bitching.

We ended up in a booth across from the Po6, which was 3 women and 3 kids, all around 4-6ish. This place was very crowded, servers running back and forth, etc. etc. and the kids kept getting up and playing in the aisle between their table and the booths on the other side (where we were sitting). The girl evidently thought she was at cheerleading practice. The boys were just goofing around. I saw one waitress say something to the kids at one point. Only once, as they were getting the check sorted out, did I hear any of the moms say anything to the kids about getting out of the way, and when she said it she didn't even turn around, just said it over her shoulder.

Bonus suck: While we were waiting outside, there was a girl yelling at her mom on a cell phone while walking in circles around a bit of landscaping in the middle of the walkway. She looked to be about 10 or 11. I heard a lot of whining and "Mom!" and "Mommy!!" and "blah blah SO BYE!!" and she was making me dizzy with her walking in circles.

On the up side, they make a really good Strawberry Martini and I saw that the kids' drinks came in plastic cups with lids and a cherry stuck onto the top of the straw. We couldn't even eat dessert, just told her to bring it in a to-go box. mmm...last bite....<dies>

Oh, and then I swung by the puppy store and there was a Puggle puppy sitting in his bowl, just lounging, all wrinkles and cute... It must have been a big day - most of the puppies were sleeping.

Oh my Dog Cheesecake Factory is so damn good!!

I always take my Mother there when she comes to visit.

I love to order their Cuban style dish, with the black beans and rice, and the caramelized plaintains...it reminds me of eating cheap yummy El Salvadorean food when I lived in Santa Fe. Fried plaintains are mind-numbingly good.

In fact, everything there is just really, really good. My Mother is a salad fanatic, and she loves their salads. She says they cut everything into pieces just the right size.
Because as we all know, on the Internet all men are men, all women are men and all children are FBI agents.

I read the thread title and was hoping. Actually, the food version is pretty much as good, but I'm supposed to be off lactose at the moment.

Let me tell ya', B&N Cafe sells Cheesecake Factory stuff, and it's so much better fresh from the source than the frozen and thawed stuff they have at B&N

We had the mini hamburger appetizer, too. They were really good. I could have them for my meal next time!

Then I had the Lemon Herb Roast Chicken. They give you so much food, though. I have enough leftover for 3 people.

Puggles are unbelievably adorable, especially as puppies. You should get one and post some pictures so I can live vicariously through you.

My husband won't let me get another dog (I have a pug already). I guess he's right - we don't have that much space and dogs are expensive.

If you have to ask, it's probably better posted at www.fratching.com

I would love to, but I don't think I'll be getting a dog any time soon. I have to make do with my monthly(ish) Pablo visits for now (yay Monday!).

              OK, I just got that...

              Sorry, Raps.

And did you know that cheesecake (the food) is technically classified as a pie?

Makes me wanna listen to Camaro now.
                  Mmm. Dirtcore.

(For anyone who doesn't own Tony Hawk's Underground 2, a band called Camaro had a song called "Cheesecake" featured in it. Also, what is dirtcore? Think rough, rowdy, sloppy punk.)

I love the food at Cheesecake Factory, but generally there is a long wait, people are obnoxious, and there usually is some problem with the service. This applies to every one I've been to, old or new.

Last time I was at cheese cake factory the wait was too long and we decided to try somewhere else. Try being the operative word there as the other people waiting didn't seem too keen on letting us out of the restaurant. I swear, people just stood in the door way chatting with each other, totally blocking the door. Never mind that there were plenty of other places to stand, but for some reason everyone decided that right in the doorway was the best place to stand. Not only that, even after me saying "Excuse me. Excuse me.... EXCUSE ME" they still didn't move. But a "get out of the $#@*#@ way!" seemed to work.

Hmm. The only time I've ever had an issue with the Cheesecake Factory was when I made the mistake of trying to get into the one on Michigan Avenue in Chicago on a July 4th weekend. Crowded doesn't even BEGIN to describe it. Otherwise, service was almost always prompt, the food was always good, and the servers were always nice and professional. Some of my fellow diners on the other hand... .

I like their food too, and have had good and so-so experiences. Yes, they are loud, and it does get crowded and the waits long...i will wait, depending on my mood.

One thing i DON'T like, is that if your entire party is not there when they call your name, they won't seat you, and you have to wait for everyone to get there, and THEN put your name on the list again. I've never been anywhere else that's made you do that; if people aren't there, i've always been able to be seated, order drinks, and wait for the stragglers. Its kind of frustrating, esp when some of my friends are less than punctual!

If you ever come to Savannah, try eating at "A Lady and Sons" Resturant sometime. The lady who runs it "Paula Deen" is world renowned for her cooking. Plus, they film the show for food network right there. For a little extra you can go be part of her studio audience and eat whatever she's cooking or take part in the show.

When you go though, be warned; you'll have to wait. It's a long wait too. Come at eleven or or ten thirty if you want to make the lunch crowd; and expect to be given one of those huge oh my god this thing is from the eighties I saw it in casino pagers while you wait. Lastly, don't bring your cellphone, or your car's automatic door entry thingy. Why? well both have a bad habit of setting off the huge pagers. The first few times is funny, but trust me when I say this.

Bubba, that big guy in the stained T shirt and jeans standing in front of you, doesn't find it funny that you've caused him to go up to the hostess six times in the past ten minutes.

They want to avoid two things:

                              1. Having, say, two people sitting at a table for four waiting for their friends, only to have their friends not show. Now the restaurant is wasting a large table when a small one would have been fine.

                              2. Having two people sip away at cheap drinks for an hour waiting for friends, when the table could have been filled and turned over with four people having an entire meal during that time.

I'm not saying you do this, I'm saying that the few bad apples who do ruin it for the rest of us.

Some restaurants have big problems with stuff like this. I had one woman consistently lie to me and say she was waiting for other people who never showed. She just wanted a big roomy table to herself. I finally figured her out and started saying "Table for one or NO table until your friends actually show up." She always ate at a small table thereafter.
