  • I want a ONE X!

And no, it's not a post about pron...you perverts. You know who you are.

This is a post about my mom. It's a relatively funny one, though in my half drowsy state induced by some pain meds, it may not be as funny as I think. Still worth writing though.

A couple weeks ago, my mother went shopping. While out, she decided to pick me up some shirts. Size wise, I don't have a perfect match. Typically anything from an XL to a XXL fits for me. Just depends on brand.

While out, my mother picks this one shirt up, looks at the tag and tosses it back. This repeats for several times before an associate from the store comes over. Looking over, he asks what is amiss, to which mom replies:

    I'm looking for a one x. These are all xl's but I need a one x.

To his credit, the associate did not laugh. He did try to politely explain to mother that what she was wanting was the same thing as an XL. She would hear nothing of it though. She even went so far as to argue this point with the man, before asking to see his manager. To the manager's credit, he DID laugh. My mother got a bit indignant about it, but he just told her quote "Ma'am, it's the same thing." He then left. My mother was not amused, convinced the men were lying to her. She only stopped when I complained that i wanted to leave. Customers were staring.

Even now, my mother is convinced that a 1x and a XL are two different sizes.

A "Pron" is what? Did you mean a "Pro"?

Maybe that's because in women's clothing they usually do mean different things. A 1X would be in in plus sizes, while an XL would be in regular sizes, normally.

Except that, as near as I can tell, they're still the same size. It may just be the brands I wear, though.

Same as 2T is the same size as a 24 month outfit. I actually had to put 2 outfits in the different sizing together to prove to my friend that they were the same size. (The 24 month outfit was on sale. The 2T wasn't. I was the same damn outfit. Just different tags in them.)

I have always noticed a difference between 1X and XL.

That's hilarious! That reminds of something my mom did a couple of weeks ago. I had lent her a couple of my movies, but one I hadn't opened yet. So she goes to give them back to me and we decided to lend Hairspray to my grandparents and I asked her if she wanted to take them Happy Feet. She said that she didn't want to because the case is too hard to open. I was confused, and she said she couldn't get it opened. She had told me she watched part of it, so I asked her how she watched it if she couldn't get the DVD out. She told me that it was really hard, and that she didn't want my grandparents to struggle with it. I look at the case, and she hadn't taken off the security seal on top of the DVD case, so of course you can't open it all the way. I pointed it out to her, and all she said was 'Oh'.

I've never seen 1X and XL in the same brand/make - as near as I've been able to tell, they're interchangeable. However, some places cut 'plus size' differently from 'regular', so I guess those places would want some sort of distinction.

My favourite shops acknowledge that people are different shapes, as well as different sizes. Now I want them to put those on the label!

Wouldn't it be so much easier to buy things if sizes were stuff like 'to fit underbust 40cm, B-C cup, long arms'. Honesty in clothing design! The Ds and DDs would know the garment would sit wrong around the bust, the As would know they'd need padding to make the garment fit its best, and Es and larger wouldn't even bother trying it on. And people with short or medium arms would know they'd want to get the sleeves altered to fit.

                            1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
                            2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
                            3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
                            4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

I don't know the name of the company, but there is at least one out there that makes button-down shirts according to bust size. So the DDs can button without gaps and the As (like me) don't have a ton of extra material on the sides. I've never tried them, though.
