    * Not really sucky but I thought it was funny. *

It has been a crazy week at work. I am full time so sometimes I have really long days. This week was full of them with early meetings, late meetings, grant deadlines, and special events running all week long (60 hours worked this week in 5 days). Wednesday was a particularly nasty day. I started at 8am and worked non-stop until 2am Thursday. Un-luckily I had a coffee/breakfast presentation at 8am, lunch meeting at noon and committee meeting at 6pm so despite no breaks I was able to eat. Enough about that onto why you are all reading this:

I live in Southern California there was a little 3.0 earthquake at 12:20am on Wednesday I was at my desk working when it happened. Soon after it my direct line rang (it happens to be the first one on the menu selection too so I sometimes get unrelated calls). Odd but my reaction was to answer it so I got to enjoy this conversation:

    Me: Guess
    NO: Night Owl Person

    Me: This is Chancencinny.
NO: (talking to someone else) I just need to leave a message**mumbling in background ** I am hurrying but I need to reschedule **more mumbling** yeah I think the recording it almost done.
    Me: Um, Hello?
NO: Hi this is (name removed to protect the silly) I just am leaving a message for ….. wait are you a real person?
    Me: Last time I checked.
NO: But it is 12:30 at night.
    Me: Yep
    NO: 12:30
Me: According to my clock it is indeed 12:30
    NO: And you are there?
    Me: Yes.
    NO: Working?
Me: I sure hope so. And now it is 12:31.
NO: Wow. At 12:30 you are still working?
    Me: Yes.
NO: What time do you close?
Me: The office closes at 6pm but I am working a little late to finish a report for tomorrow.
    NO: More then a little.....................................
    Me: ....................
NO: Did you feel the earthquake?
Me: Yeah, it was just a little one though.
NO: Just a little rattle. **laughs** You are seriously still working?
    Me: Yes.
    NO: At 12:30 at night.
Me: Yes. Now is there something I can help you with?
NO: Well I was calling to reschedule and interview with (coworker). My name is ________ and my phone number for her to call me back is _________________.
Me: Okay. I’ll let her know.
    NO: 12:30 at night.
    Me: Yes.........................................Is that everything?
    NO: Sure, yeah, good night.

    *checks the USGS site*

Huh, so there was. I almost never notice anything below about 4, myself.

That caller was a ninny, though.

Speaking of the USGS site ... check out the recent quick we got: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/...8pdbs/#details

And, working late ... who here besides me has slept on garbage bags filled with paper shreddings after pulling an all-nighter?

I had a similar reaction when I found out my bank had a working online chat helpdesk person at 5AM on December 27th.
Good thing, since I needed one immediately too.

haven't done that yet... I have before slept in my car though when I lived in Reno and worked in Carson and had to do an opening shift right after a closing shift... mainly because closing was at 11pm opening was at 5am and depending on how much I sped it was from half an hour to an hour each way drive.

I've slept sitting up against a wall, although, if it was late enough, I usually used one of the couches in a partner's office.

Me, too, usually. I notice them more in the taller buildings though, because they're built to roll with the earthquakes.

To be honest I kind of understand the reaction of the caller in the OP. I'm so used to everything having voicemail after 4-5 o'clock in the afternoon, I'd be pretty damn shocked about it too. However, I probably would have moved on a bit more quickly from my initial amazement than that person did.
