  • Overheard at work

I was talking to some people in the breakroom at work and one of the new people is talking about his old job working for a corner store, and how he got robbed at gunpoint a couple times. He's joking about it then he says this:

"I should have asked the guy to give me some of the $500 that was in the till!" (I'm paraphrasing, but that's the gist of what he said)

Seriously, no wonder they got robbed so many times (he had a couple more stories from there too, and this is a small town) I mean, $500 in the till and you're working alone at night? I mean it's just going to get you robbed more often if people start realizing that you have that much in the till.

I wonder if any of the robberies were "inside jobs". If employees knew how much was in the till, then certain friends or acquaintences would as well. Our store was once robbed (dry cleaner and this happened at night, so no injuries thankfully) and the money was always stashed between a pile of clothes in the closet. Unless someone was told that, they wouldn't know where to look. Nothing else was disturbed, but they found the cash.

We got a safe later and were robbed again. If you can call busting the window and trying to chisel a safe that's bolted heavily to the floor. Needless to say, they didn't get a darn thing that time.

Could be, but from the sounds of it, they acutally kept that much money in the till. It's not too difficult to figure out if a store does that kind of thing either. If they can change a hundred with no problem, and you see lots of 20's or 10's, it's pretty obvious they have more than pocket change in the till. The gas station I used to work at didn't allow more than $70 in the till at one time, we usually had less than $50, and absolutely no $20's, they left the till as soon as we got them. the sign on our door said we carried less than $30, which was true bill-wise, but we usually had lots of coin (Canadian store, so loonies and toonies add up).

well depending on where he is, $500 might not be that much... and I'm now painting a target on my back, but hotels normally will keep about $400 plus in the tils so they can do deposit refunds in the morning... I've seen nights were we have over $1000 just in deposits that we can't drop in the safe...

and now there is no way in hell any of you are getting the address to where I work, unless you're going to share

The Wawa near me apparently has small safes under each register, which they put the larger bills in (20 or higher). The cool thing is that the bills go in one at a time through a slot like the bill slot in a vending machine. There is no possibility of getting in through the slot and "fishing" out any bills, which was theoretically possible in the slot that goes into the lockbox within the safe at my store. But then that slot was meant for cash pickup envelopes and the safe was in the locked cashroom within the locked breakroom. The safe itself opens with a combination but the box inside needs a key that only the managers have.

I'm told that at WaWa you get a $0.50 and hour pay raise if you're on shift when it's robbed.

This seems a very odd thing to say when you're a new employee and does not exactly proclaim one's honesty.
Cynic in me perhaps but it sound like what someone might say to see what sort of reaction (i.e., how honest the CW is) they get.

It's a pretty small convenience store in a small town, so there's really not reason to have that much money in the till, I mean I worked at a busy gas station in a large city, and we managed on less than $70 in the till. I mean, gas stations and convenience stores are pretty common places for robberies.

Yeah the gas station I worked at had a safe with these slot things that you pulled out, put the safe drop into and closed, you couldn't get into that safe to reach anything if you tried. Though that safe sounds pretty cool.

I think he was really joking, he seems like a pretty decent guy from what I've seen of him. Given it's probably not a smart thing to say, especially at a casino. :P But there are eyes eeeverywhere :P

that always amazed me that so many people would rob convenience stores when it's common knowledge they keep so little cash on hand... idiots... you're better off robbing a motel 6.

It's because of stores like this, that acutally do keep this much cash on hand. And I think because most often there is just the one employee working, as opposed to a hotel which has many possible witnesses. Just a theory of mine. Not to mention a lot of robbers steal cigarettes too, so there's that.
