have a hard time with math(not being stereotypical, just a fact...a sad sad fact) so when I was taking the required math courses I paid attention. But one class...grrrr. I sat in front of a guy who was retaking the course and thought he knew better than our instructor. With his stupid "but why not this way instead..." remarks and her trying to say "we are doing it this way..." and me getting completely lost in the mix, I am surprised I passed. Not with the grades I hoped to. So many times I dreamed of turning around, smacking him with my book like the punk that he is, and telling him to shut up...FOREVER!!! Plus had a hard time finding time to meet with my instructor because I worked full time with a boss who didn't want to be bothered to do her job, so I did it for her.

my bro has a coworker who takes the cake for all that is wrong with high school, in this town anyways. he had a kid who was griping about his teacher and how she hates him and is failing him for no reason. Bro asks for details. Kid tells him about latest essay he had to do. Bro offers help, tells him to bring in essay and see if he can find the problem. Oh did Brother man find the problem. The kid did his whole essay in chat-speak. With lol's and all that. Seriously he expected to pass. I cry for our future.

We had a guy in my very first class ask the professor (in front of 200 + people) how she wanted us to take notes

she told him take any kind of notes he wanted "this isnt high school, its up to you to take notes that you can understand"

he replied with .... "no I meant do you want us to take notes in a book or is refil okay?"

the whole class went so silent you could have heard a mouse fart

she asked him to come talk to her after class...

Yup. I had this happen in a second-year psych class. I was most confused... when I was in high school, we were pretty well on our own as far as notes went, never MIND university. But I'm old and cranky, I guess.

People in my senior English seminar were complaining yesterday about the "ridiculous" number of novels they had to read for their next lot of classes (I guess they're at least getting started early - they were talking about the May-June semester). "Twelve books - nobody can read that much!!" one stated, and I guess I made a noise or something, so she looked at me and I said um, well, I read that many novels (yes, even fat nineteenth century ones) in a month...

My junior high was very very anal about note-taking. The teachers all wanted you to do it a certain way--divide a page in half, write a question on the left-hand side, and write the answer on the other side. Or a term on the left side and its definition on the right.

Then you folded the page over.

Once I hit high school, I said "fuck this shit" and took notes my own way.

Often times in College, I have wanted to just get a good grade for showing up. It isn't doing the work that I mind, it's the overwhelming fear of doing the work WRONG that makes it so difficult for me. Course, I don't get mad when things aren't that way.

The only class I ever made a point of sitting in the front row for was Japanese lecture , partly because the Sensei would call on kids from the back predominantly, and partly because it was easier to follow. This year I have a different Sensei, who is much harder to follow (thick accent and lecture is mostly in Japanese) and have taken to sitting in the back because, with my schedule, I must get up at 6 am every morning and either stay at school or work until 9 or 10 at night, and falling asleep in the front row is generally frowned upon

SC: this isn't fair! I DEMAND you grade me fairly, since it was YOU not giving adequate information. You didn't explain things right, rabblerabblewhinewhine.
See, I'm not so forgiving my response to that would have been

"Very well, you didn't follow instruction, you used the wrong data, therefore you have the wrong answer, I'll grade you like the real world, you failed, get out."

I still cannot work out why kids love my teaching, I'm not nice.

Probly the same reason I loved my teachers who were like that: You are tough, but fair. Most kids don't mind hard lessons as much if they know you really are willing to help them if they're honestly working at it. I hated "coasting" classes. I didn't learn much, and I loathe busy work.

You don't get a sense of accomplishment from an "easy" teacher.

I recall that back in the 4th grade I was reading a novel a day for a while. Granted they were Robert Heinlein novels, but I was still reading one a day. If I could do that now, I might get caught up on my reading sometime this century.
