I had a BITE of someone's deep fried candy bar this year. I think I nearly blacked out and I couldn't hear over the din of my arteries hardening and my thighs getting bigger.
I'm envious of all you folks who can still still stuff their faces with carnival food. I use to LOVE going to fairs and amusement parks partly because I could gorge myself on (badly over-priced) fried foods and chocolate coated sweets.

Now that I'm not in my teens or twenties anymore, my body has decided that I need to be punished any time I eat foods like this and it's just not a fun experience any more.

FUNNEL CAKE! FUNNEL CAKE! It's the law in Texas! When you visit a fair, faire (Four Winds Faire... the live blade show, the non-rehearsed jousting, forging blades with my karate sensei! I miss you! ), or massive flea market (Canton Trade Days, how I miss thee and your three massive areas of market fleas!) you *must* have funnel cake! Batter squeezed out of an icing tube into a deep fryer until golden brown and then covered with a layer of powdered sugar. The game was to be the one without it all over you by the end!

I *live* for the Virginia State Fair!

Where else can you see a guy with a chainsaw carve a block of wood into an owl? Or art and crafts that you wouldn't believe were made by kids? Or ducklings playing on a little slide? Or chicks hatching? And so on...

Of course, I love the food there too! Buffalo burgers, fried oreos, huge bowls of curly fries, fresh-made apple cider, kettle corn...

I particularly love hanging around the animal areas, and impressing people with my knowledge of the various breeds. I also once caught a runaway goat.

          Demolition Derbies

If you're going to a State/County fair, the required activity is the demolition derby. Especially if they're using school buses or Combines.

Watching these two story farm vehicles flip on their sides is always hilarious.
