    And yes, the IRS does cross-reference dependants. You will get a letter requesting clarification if someone else is claiming your dependants that year. It has been the bane of many divorced parents, both claiming the children.
    That's always been my fear that my ex and I will mess up somehow. Luckily, my taxes seem to always be done first (meaning, I'm the more organized of the two of us and I compare to last year so I know 100% what child is mine to claim etc) and we switch out the kids each year. Can't remember the number of the form off the top of my head but in a nutshell it says that I am NOT claiming this particular child this year, he is and I sign it with copies in both of our files.
