  • Grr... :(

I'm not sure if this goes here or in General Chat, please move at your discretion. I thought it might go here, since I've posted stuff about my school here before.

Background: My university is in Maine. That means we get lots of snow in the winter. My school has a two-type parking ban system. They'll ban people from parking in a certain set of lots, plow one night, then ban the lots that were unbanned the night before to plow them. They're named Parking Bans 1 & 2. The system works fairly well, normally.

Monday night the NE area got a fair amount of snow, but southern Maine got slammed with over a foot. Normal for this time of year. Last night was a Parking Ban 1 on the resident's campus, and tonight there was a Parking Ban 2.

Now normally, I move my car asap so I can get a good spot. However, I'd promised my friend on Monday before the snowstorm that I'd have dinner with him and we'd go to the mall tonight. I didn't want to cancel since I don't see him often, so we went out and had a good time. I got back to the campus around 7:45pm and start looking for a spot.

Please believe me when I say that I spent a good 35 minutes looking for one. I checked resident lots, commuter lots, any lot that was appropriate to park in. Zip, nada. People were parked on sidewalks and in firelanes, and literally there was no spot open. I was about to go ask the police office what I should do when I turned into the lot next to our sports complex. I saw a woman walk to her truck, and saw that she had a staff sticker. Bingo, spot! I put on my blinker, put my car in park, and began to wait patiently.

Well, apparently, she was not as pleased as I was. She started giving me dirty looks. Then, she started going eeeeeeextra slow, even getting out to put on her jacket (!!!) all the while glaring at me. Why did you need to put your jacket on when you're getting in your car? Why not put it on before?

In the end I waited 10 minutes while she took her time, which was not really a bother to me. What bothered me was right before she pulled out, she honked and gave me the finger. Then, she squealed her tires getting out of the spot.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, lady? Look, I understand. I hate it when people hound me to leave my parking spot. But I tried to be as nice as possible about it, smiling at her and the like. Honestly, I mean it when I say there is NO parking. There were at least 20 cars that turned into the lot looking for parking in the time I waited. At least.

Should I have gotten out of my car and explained the situation? Should I have been nicer about it? I just don't think giving a person a rude gesture for waiting patiently for your parking spot is necessary, unless they're rude about it. Bah, maybe I'm sensitive.

I'm not fond of parking space stalkers either, but you had a good reason--half the lots were off-limits to you and there was literally no place else to park.

I notice a lot of people just do that slow moving thing when people are waiting for no real reason. I mean, they find it annoying, but half the time are the people waiting really that bad? I've heard stories where the person was just as patient as you, until they could tell that the other person was being slow to spite them. I would be angry about that, too! Unless the person is blocking your way out, or honking their horn at you or whatever, I don't see a reason to be a jerk about it. So, yeah, I think she was just being stupid.

The *only* time I'll move really slow to leave a parking spot is if I'm being stalked for mine, and there's a spot open two spaces down.

Yeah, it happens a lot, and most of the time, my "stalkers" aren't very nice. They pull up and honk for me to hurry up.

As for your lady...sounds like she's a real piece of work.

The only time I'll ever move that slow is if a car has decided to barracade me in, honk, and catbuttt face me as I get back to my car. I can't get out if you've blocked me in, Einstien! You have all-wheel drive. I have a compact car. I can't climb over that foot high island as easily as you can.

I think the lady was out of line giving you the finger, but I won't lie. I've seen spot-stalking threads on the board before, and people (including some in this thread already) here have said "I do go more slowly to spite them for waiting." There have even been studies done about it, and it's something a lot of people do. I don't drive, though, so I've never thought about what I'd do on either end of the situation.

If I see someone waiting for my parking space, I'll get in my truck and get out of the space. If I have stuff that I need to reorganize, I'll go to an empty part of the lot to do that.

I don't even really care about that. I try to be a patient person. I've even gone extra slow myself when I feel someone needs to learn a lesson about patience. But the attitude I felt was undeserved. I wasn't making faces or yelling at her to hurry up.

No doubts there. Like I said, her attitude was out of line. Unfortunately, the "make 'em wait" attitude is incredibly wide-spread.

I deal with parking stalkers in my own way.

See, I almost invariably park way out on the edge of the parking lot. So, someone will begin stalking me as soon as I leave the building. They'll follow me...then follow me...keep following me...

Its amazing how many empty parking spaces they will drive right by in an attempt to steal my particular parking space, never mind that its probably the furthest car from the building.

That is the spitting definition of pretty much every customer in my store. "Oh look, that nice employee dropped what he was doing because he saw me coming and decided to do the courteous thing and get out of the way to let me by. LET'S MOVE SLOWER!!!" (bonus points for slowing down, stopping right where I was working and taking your sweet time carefully studying every single word of every single item on every single shelf within an foot radius, followed by FINALLY getting the f out of the way. SLOOOOOOOOWLY.

I very much agree with Broomjockey. I have even been the slow moving bitch because I saw someone who was practically foaming at the mouth and pounding their steering wheel freaking out and backing up traffic because they HAD to have my spot right meow.

Now, if someone is tootling along and sees me leaving and I see them wait and they appear to be just waiting like normal, no signs of rabies or whatever, I'll move and let them have it. But the second they start acting like children and practically blocking me in and backing up everyone else just to get MY spot....gloves are off and I'm sitting there.
