Road the bus when it was snowing out and I wasn't about to drive in it, since being from LA snow is something we snort not drive in

I like the bus system here. I don't take the actual CT Transit buses, but the university has a bus system set up for students and student affiliates (spouses, etc.) which is free. I've also ridden the UTA buses in Provo. Both bus systems, if the bus coming wasn't the one you wanted, you backed away from the curb or waved the bus on. Otherwise, the bus stopped for you. Pretty straightforward, I thought.

Out here if you are standing at a bus stop the bus automatically stops. Then again in a casino town you'd be surprised to how many people actually don't own a car or have ever had a license. Which I am not bashing on. It just shocked me when I moved from CA where everybody I knew all had their stuff by age 16.
          Anakah,
You'd be surprised how many Chicago residents don't own cars (at least those who live in the city). As parking tends to be a cruel, expensive joke--depending on your neighborhood, so many (your truly included) give up on having one. I myself did not buy one 'til I moved to the 'burbs. With regard to busses, they automatically stop at each designed (by a sign) stop if there is someone there.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

In my city, there isn't really much overlap on the bus routes (we have maybe 6 routes, and only 2 spots where they tend to meet/overlap). But still, having started my bus experiences in bigger towns, I tend to do both the wave and the headshake for when I do/do not want the coming bus.

Of course, being in the snow belt, the actual bus stops tend to be too clogged with snow to wait at, so the drivers prefer people to get on/get off at the closest driveways to the stop, which makes the hand wave indicator more appropriate.

Something I'm a bit curious about and I'm wondering if it's a local thing or what. How many bus riders here thank their driver when they get off? It's something I (and a lot of other riders I've noticed) tend to do, but it may just be a small city type thing, since most of the regulars (riders and drivers) know eachother, and the routes are rarely busy.

I thank my bus driver if I get off at the front door, and sometimes from the back. That might just be because I am Canadian though.

I do it if I'm at the front door, or if the driver was good, or I'm in an exceptionally bright mood, or any of a half-dozen other factors. I probably say it more often than not. I'll also wave instead, sometimes. Then again, <--Canadian.

Unless I'm utterly distracted by Daughter, I say thank you when I get off. I figure it's just polite, since the driver is working so hard making sure I get where I'm going.

As to the "no, take me to MAIN Street" issue, yes--it's a BUS and not a TAXI!
