The newest thing that's been going around my area is those "Your car's warranty is about to expire. If you don't talk to us RIGHT NOW you might not be covered for any accidents you have!!!"
I found out yesterday that my son's been getting those on his cell phone. I can think of at least 2 things wrong with that -- 1, he doesn't own a car; 2, he's only 15.

U.S. citizens can put themselves on something called the National Do Not Call List. It takes 30 days for everything to be processed, but it's worthwhile. Any telemarketer who violates that list risks some nasty fines.

I'm on the list myself. It makes my life a helluva lot easier.

Canada has one of those too, but you have to have info on them to report them. Like their phone number, but most put up fake numbers, one of the ones I keep getting is from 000-123-4567 or something. And don't you think that if they were legit enough to not ignore the DNCL, they wouldn't be making scam calls to begin with?

I get those constantly on my cell phone no less, and I have no idea where they got the number. "This is the 2nd notice that the factory warranty on your vehicle is about to expire." Uh huh. a) My car and my truck are both 10 years old... warranty on them has been LONG gone. b) It's been the 2nd notice IN ALL 50+ CALLS!!
They stopped calling when I answered and asked "how can a car I purchased without a warranty be ready to expire? She agreed to just hang up. It works every time

My other car I did have a factory extended warranty I purchased through the dealer/manufacture and it expired in 2007, but none of the mailings sent to me were from chrysler so I knew right there it was all bogus. They go through the shedder and become cat box stuffin'.

Tell them its a cell phone and stop calling and get your Cell phones on the Do Not Call list already!

Cell phones in Canada are already supposed to be Do Not Call, no need to register, and if they're giving fake numbers out, it's kinda hard to do anything about it.

Lately I've been getting something similar - calls from a fake debt collection agency. They transfer you straight to a computer system that wants you to enter things like your credit card number, code on the back, etc 'before' speaking to anyone. Pretty bad job at a scam if you ask me.

There is absolutely nothing I would be in debt over. My family pays my college bills; the only things that I pay for are groceries and art materials. My rent, utilities, etc are payed through the summer. My online banking statements show that I still have a lot of money in there.
my girlfriend is in the same boat. about 3 months ago she started receiving calls from an 866-720-1469 number (sometimes 3 or 4 times a day from 7am to 10pm Thank Gods for caller ID). never left a message nor was anyone there if you did answer the phone. I got the number off of the caller ID and did a Google search on it. turns out it is this very very shady "collections" company (BBB gives it an F). I went to several different sites and read a lot of very negative comments about this company. things like calling relatives about a debt, calling the wrong person (same possible name but not in the same city or state), calling a person work, calling persons not EVEN owing any debt, calling about collecting a debt from a person who has been dead for 10 years, etc.

I think the name of the company is Allied Interstate. the tend to be very persistant. the only thing we can think is that maybe her daughters ex-boyfriend has some outstanding debt (lived with daughter and Mom for a while) or one of her relatives has a debt and they are calling all relations.

Which is hilarious because, at least in the US, the Fair Credit Collections Act just completely negated that debt, if that's the case.

It may have by the letter of the law but from what I read on several different sights they just keep on going and going and lying, and scamming, and threating and being rude crude and obnoxious and calling someone even if they do not owe anything to anyone.

this company has been fined, sued, investigated, alien anal probed and still just keeps on with the very shady practices

I forgot about that! Thanks for the link, I added myself to it. I'll be spreading the word around to the people I know who are in the same boat.

heh, we were getting those car warrenties and you won a prize and blahblah scams, and we had a very efficient way of dealing with it. i simply threatened the man with sharp objects should i hear from them again, and the hubby yelled profanities in to the phone as only scary metal guys seem to be able too. havent heard form them since

All my numbers are on the DNC list.
The company that will lower your Credit Card doesn't give a flying flip.
I have pressed 1 gotten the company name and said I was going to report them. and the person just started cussing at me. Ahh the joy of making it worse . . .I got to report to the Police Department on that one. (In my city there is a law that allows for this report)
As for the Car Warranty - I get those on my cell every now and then. . . of course if I don't know the number I am not taking the call - why waste my minutes if I don't know you?

So obviously a scam but... is it legal for a valid credit company to refuse that information?
Even if is is not actually prohibited by law, can you think of any halfway honest reason why a credit card company would even want to do that? I can't.

The worst part is is that they have been HOUNDING me. I get at least one call from places like that a day. My phone number isn't listed anywhere on the internet except for Facebook, and I'm starting to think that's the cause. I really wish there was a way to ignore that crap.
press 2 when they call. that is the "remove me from your list" key and it seemed to me to work. i got 'em about twice a week and none since then. unlike email spam which is free to spend they do pay for their calls so i guess they stop calling once they know you won't buy.

if they start calling again i will start screwing with them real bad though.
