A friend of mine sent me a package via Fedex, it's my birthday present. According to Fedex it was delivered on Friday (a week ago) to someone whose name is nothing whatsoever like mine.

Unfortunately the offices are closed now so i can't phone up and ask what the flying NFBSK is going on. Only thing we can think of is that he misspelled the name of my street. I'm at Ashworth street, there's a street down the road called Ashford and he spelled it as Ashforth street, but even so UK postcodes are unique to a street so if the driver was paying attention it should still have come to me.

*sigh* Not sure what to do now, if the person who signed for it denies it my birthday gift is lost forever

So, in short, don't sign for stuff that isn't yours and isn't for someone you know. It's not nice. And if you do deliveries for a living....make sure it's goign to the right address.

Couldn't the person who signed for it be charged with theft or something though? I mean, if they signed for it... that's kind of proof they had it in their possession at least for a short while.

Yes, I agree. Considering the item was addressed incorrectly and could have been either street, it's probably not something you can land on FedEx's door. They delivered to what they believed to be the closest match, and someone signed for it. I suppose the alternative is they send it back to your sender, which in the long run is going to suit you better, but probably not what we want.

However, if you can verify they delivered it to Ashford St, you then have a signature of someone signing for it there. If they deny receipt and fail to hand it over, involve your local constabulary.

Yeah, i agree, i think it's goign to be an issue with the people at that address. When asked to sign for the package they would have seen [myname] written on it and realised it wasn't theirs, but took it anyway. I'll have a word with fedex xsee what my next step should be.

People accept packages that don't belong to them all the time. Sometime to the wrong company and sometimes to individuals. We used to get phone calls from the recipient when something was messed up (sometimes our fault, sometimes UPS's), but nowadays those calls are few and far between. Most companies don't have the time or wherewithall to bother contacting vendors "to be nice". They just don't worry about it and noone is the wiser.

That's sad... it could be a problem with the address, but it does sound like maybe someone signed for it. Although hopefully they just signed for it without looking at the name, and will try and return it! I do that a lot myself

Around here, though, FedEx is really hit or miss with their drivers... We get a lot of packages at work, and there is one driver who when he shows up it is 99% of the time not our package he is delivering. Everybody else seems competent, but this guy is just silly. He must not even read the label...

Heh. reminds me of an apartment I was in once. We didn't really know our neighboors across the hall, but one night coming home late, we saw that they had left their keys in the door! We didn't want to wake them, so we took the keys and left a note. They were VERY grateful when they came over the next morning.

Are you able to check the delivery address of the package? Most times that I've gone through couriers they always start by asking for the postcode, once that's resolved they then ask for the house\flat number. If your friend entered the post code correctly then there should be no way (barring driver idiocy) that the parcel ended up in the wrong place. IIRC the delivery address should be findable under the "Track a package" feature.

Remember, there's always a chance that your friend fracked up on the label writing

Do a search for the person here. It should show up if the person's phone number isn't unlisted.

Thanks dendawg but i'm in the UK Besides i..uh...already used some of the stuff we use at work to track down debtors

They were listed but no address given and no telephone number, however i now know that they live wihtin 3 miles of me, putting all 3 of the potential other addresses it's gone to firmly in the picture.

I also contacted Fedex, they're investigating it and will contact me back soon.

This reminds me of the world's stupidest UPS driver.

I had just rented a new house and had gotten the keys that morning. Later that evening I came back to the house with my first load of stuff. Waiting me for at the door was a big box with a UPS label. WTF? I had just moved in! I hadn't ordered anything yet! I looked at the label and it's for "62 Main Street." I moved into "72 Main Street."

So I set off to meet my first set of new neighbors! Luckily the street goes by 10's, so 62 was right next door. I thought it might have been a simple mistake delivering to the house next door. That was completely underestimating the stupidity of this UPS driver.

I knocked at the door, introduced myself, and gave them their package. It turns out they had ordered a ton of stuff from Amazon. They had gotten 2 packages themselves that same day and thought the third package was just delayed or something. So yes, that is how stupid this UPS driver was. He had 3 packages for the same house. He delivers 2 to the right address, decides my porch looks lonely, so he leaves one for me.

He's done that at least 2 more times since then!!!! Plus he once delivered a package of mine to "172 Main Street." Unfortunately, those neighbors weren't as nice as I am - they KEPT my package. Then the stupid UPS guy took a week to go to their house and then deliver it to me AND acted all put out about having to do it!!! I would have gone over to my neighbor's house and gotten the package myself (and given them a nasty look for being jerks) but UPS wouldn't tell me where it was for "privacy" reasons. The stupid UPS driver doesn't care about privacy because he told me. He can't win for losing. Idiot.

Update: and almost exactly 24 hours later, i've got the package. I was right and it was delivered to Ashford street in error.

They also mis-read my frined's handwriting to change the K in my town ro an R, an A in my name to an O and most of the postcode to lord knows what. He's written the postcode right, (and it makes sense to me to look at) but it's evidently gone into the system wrong.

Oh well. My kitty cat is now sitting proudly in her shiny new collar, which is perfect timing since she keeps pulling a houdini and vanishing when i come home and showing up at the door hours later.

We've gotten wrong packages several times. Usually it's just a number or two off, and we'll just carry it over. But once we once came home to find a package on our front step. We had ordered a few things, so we picked it up and took it in. Then we noticed the address label. We live at "2525 Von Home Street". The address on the label was "2525 Balmytree". Not exactly the same street. We carried it the two blocks over and left it on the correct porch.
