  • You suck for ripping-off the Salvation Army

I was at one of my favorite places to shop besides Goodwill when I heard an announcement over their speakers.

Basically, a manager announced for staff to watch for people switching tags in various areas of the store. If the spotted said switchers, they were to be escorted from the store immediately.

I couldn't believe that people ACTUALLY do this. I mean, you're only paying a couple of dollars per item for your typical clothes, maybe more for suits, dresses, etc. Do you really have to steal from a THRIFT STORE!!??

I asked the cashier about the annoucement later. She said that a few minutes before the annoucement someone had attempted to buy shoes with a sticker for $1.99. But there is a code system for knowing the price of every item, and it's written somewhere on the item, so the cashier could tell the shoes had actually been priced at $4.99 and told the very nervous woman buying them so. The woman ended-up paying the price and fleeing the store. The cashier said the same thing happened earlier with a very nice shoulder purse that a woman tried to change the price to $1.99.

The people stealing will have a 'very special' place to go when they die. Doubly so I think because I also learned from the cashier that the money they take-in goes to medical funding!!!

When I worked at a thrift store they tried the same stuff. We were told how to tell if clothing prices had gotten switched. I worked in clothing (except for a few weeks), so I never knew what the other half of the store did, but I imagine there's ways to tell.

They also stole $1 shirts from us by switching our nice clean shirts (we sorted/cleaned them!) for their nasty dirty stinky shirts.

I won't share what they did to the shirts in the fitting rooms. Bleh. I'll just say they were unsellable.

The point of that thrift store is to train people so that they can get jobs in other places and be self-sufficient. Way to help that not happen, thieves!

Some people really are that bad.

I think the ones that really suck are the people who steal donations that have been left in drop-off bins. I can understand a bum taking a pair of shoes or a shirt, but most of these people are doing just fine. There was even a local news show that filmed people who regularly drove around at night checking all the drop-off bins for designer and high end goodies to steal.

A local news station here did something similar.

I actually witnessed this one day when my mom and I were dropping stuff in the bin outside the grocery store (I jumped out of the car and yelled at the guy, two employees started coming over and the guy took off in a fancy SUV). Shortly after that happened and the piece aired, the dropoff bin was gone.

What the hell?!!! That's stealing from charity no matter how you slice it and there's a special spot reserved in hell for those kinds of asshats.

shepherd book's special hell comes to mind.

saw on the news too that some churches had to restructure how they handled donations, because some of the money handlers were keeping it for themselves. one lady was finally caught after stealing a few hundred thousand over the years.

indeed! Still, there are people who will steal anything from anyone. They don't care what it is...if they want it, they *will* take it. Also, I was always told that even many poorer folks have more class than to steal from charity. They usually see it as shooting themselves in the foot. That is, if they rip off the charity, it can no longer help them.
