I don't believe it is legal, but they're accepted by the banks. Many stores won't take them

They don't really have a choice these days, since all the ATMs I've used in London recently only seem to spit out Scottish notes. My guess is that it's because the English banks are broke.

Hehe... all the Scottish banks are broke, too!

The only time I usually have an issue with northern notes (Northern Irish or Scottish) in England is when I get a cashier who has never seen them before and looks at me like I am a total crim.

I'll mention this incident took place in Scotland, so I honestly don't know why he needed to switch them over.
